Just a quick hit for today as the Calgary Flames have finally announced the contract extension of 24 year old Lance Bouma.

There was some curiosity around the length of time it took for the Flames to sign the Alberta native, however the two parties have come to an agreement on a one year contract. The cap hit/dollar figures have not yet been released, but I would expect that he’ll sign between $1M-1.5M.

Earlier this year I announced that it was unlikely that Bouma would resign with the Flames. I was provided some information from a friend close to the organization that Lance was one player who he felt would not likely be resigned; the reasoning behind this was not provided to me, however I had a feeling that it was due to Lance wanting to take on a bigger role than was being provided by the Flames.

Having played in just his first full NHL season last year with the Flames, it could stand to reason that Lance perhaps built up a little frustration given the lack of opportunity which was awarded to him. Thought to be one of the hardest working guys on the roster and someone who played with his heart on his sleeve, Bouma played a total of 43 NHL games prior to last year since being drafted in 2008.

I’d like to reiterate that the above is all postulation on my part, but I can tell you that the individual who initially gave me this information has not let me down to date. That said, the worry is over and the Flames will have Bouma for at least one added season. The 24 year old center will look to provide that added level of grit, compete, and try his best to provide energy to the 4th line. Oh, and did I mention the shot blocking?

In closing, I’d like to stress that I am glad that this individual was signed into next year and that the Flames will be a better team with him in their lineup, than without. The character and competitiveness which he brings is contagious and it will certainly be something that will pay in dividends with respect to the development of the team’s rookies.
Here’s a little video for you all to enjoy.
