Daley Sweeps Gaining Steam

It is far from a lock that the Dallas Stars will trade Trevor Daley this season. However, Dallas knows that it can get a lot of value for the defenseman -- the trade prices on D-men continue to be inflated leaguwide -- if they decide to move him.

Three reasons:

1) Daley's mobility is coveted by teams that are a little slow on the blueline, especially ones with a corps of big defensemen who can offset the addition of an undersized player.

2) Daley's contract is very attractive. With the inflation of defense salaries in general, and the cap going way up next year and beyond -- getting a proven NHL defenseman at a $3.3 million cap hit on a deal that runs through 2016-17 is a bargain in today's market. (This is something many people fail to grasp -- the standard market prices on even "average" NHL defensemen are insane, and will only get more insane in the seasons to come).

3) Although the Stars are lacking depth on their own defense and Daley is one of their more reliable players, they would like to get a little bigger and more physical than the overall group they have now.

Right now, if Daley gets moved, I'm hearing that Boston or Minnesota are the most likely to come up with an offer that would convince Jim Nill to move Daley. Yes, this is a bit of a landscape change from what I was hearing a few weeks ago. Many other teams remain interested, however.

Daley has a limited no-trade clause, but that would not be a huge obstacle if it comes to the Stars electing to move him this year.
