Bruins enforcer Shawn Thornton has issued a statement in the aftermath of the 15 game suspension that was handed to him earlier this afternoon by the NHL Department of Players Safety.

Is Thornton mounting an appeal?

Although its well within his right to appeal the stiff suspension, I feel like he should serve his time and act contrite. What he did to Orpik would have landed him in jail had he attacked him outside the arena. It was a brutal assault. In my opinion,Thornton should be thankful that it wasn't a 25-30 game suspension.

Updated 2pm EDT:

Stick tap, Brendan Shanahan for having the resolve and courage to ignore all of the outside noise and conjecture. The Bruins ownership and management could not lobby to lessen the severity of the verdict.

According to TSN, the NHL Department of Players safety has suspended Boston Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton for 15 games for his vicious assault on Pittsburgh Penguins D Brooks Orpik last Saturday night. Orpik suffered a concussion and hasn't played since he was attacked by Thornton.

I've said right along that Thornton deserves a long suspension. I even said 15 games. I like it because Thornton is a first time offender, otherwise it would have been 20+ games.

Zero. Tolerance.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Thornton will forfeit $84,615.45. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Much more to come....

Shanahan has also suspended Toronto's David Clarkson for two games.

Updated 1:35pm:

The Chicago Blackhawks have made a move to shore up their goaltending rotation.

Rookie Antii Raanta is the starter while the injured Corey Crawford recovers from his lower body injury that he suffered last Sunday night.

The hawks have acquired veteran backup Jason Labarbera from the Edmonton Oilers.

LaBarbera just won the Lotto 649, going from worst to first.

Sabres head coach is giving the four by six to Jhonas Enroth for this afternoon's tilt with Calgary.

Nolan said in his pregame presser that Matt Ellis will take the warm-ups and will play if Cody Hodgson cannot answer the bell.

Brayden McNabb will play. Mark Pysyk sitting?

Thanks, Sabres.com

Calgary will play super teen Sean Monahan today who has missed tim ewith an injury.

Lines and D pairs shortly....

Scouts from Boston, Winnipeg, Chicago, Nashville, Montreal, New Jersey, Vancouver, Edmonton, Philly, and Colorado are scheduled to be in the house today.

Fred Roy isn't the biggest dog in the fight but you better beware. He bites when punks take unfair advantage of his teammates. Mitch heard sucker-punched Rasmus Ristolainen three weeks ago . Risto suffered a concussion as a result of the blow to the head.

Roy held Heard accountable for the punk play Friday night.

If I'm Ted Nolan, I call the kid up for a game to reward him for his honest, tenacious style of play.

Let the speculation begin.

The Sabres have announced that Amerks captain Matt Ellis has been called up for today's 2pm matinee vs. Calgary.

Cody Hodgson missed Thursday night's game in Ottawa. He also missed practice on Friday.

Would not surprise me if CoHo sits out again today.

There are no game day skates today.

I'll tell you line trios and D pairs at 1:30pm when the two teams take their warm-ups.
