The Calgary Flames have made a trade with none other than the Edmonton Oilers today for a package of Ladislav Smid and Olivier Roy in exchange for Roman Horak and Laurent Brossoit.

This is a good deal for both sides as the Oilers have acquired a good young goalie in Brossoit, and the Flames have acquired a steady defenseman in Smid who can help with their ailing defense. Smid also plays a gritty Burke style of hockey, who likely had a lot of say in the deal.

The 27 year old was struggling under MacTavish who employs a strong puck possession type of game, however his ability to be a shutdown guy will be welcomed in Calgary.

I will have more of a write up later to discuss and analyze the deal, however it appears it is a precusor to Ilya Bryzgalov moving to the Oilers, as Darren Dreger says talks are heating up.
