New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello is up to his old tricks.

He used as much time as possible and worked a little roster manipulation, but the Devils temporarily finalized their 23-man roster.

In order to cut down to 23 roster players, the Devils placed Patrik Elias on injured reserve retroactive to last Wednesday. Meanwhile Mattias Tedenby was designated as a non-roster player because he's currently banged up.

Elias should be ready to play in Thursday's season opener against Pittsburgh. He was just placed on IR so Lamoriello could get under the 23-man roster limit and buy more time to decide what to do with the team.

Lamoriello has a couple options here. He can a) use the extra couple days to try and work out a trade or; b) place a couple players on waivers within the next day or two.

Since all 23-man rosters are finalized league-wide, that would give the Devils a better chance of passing a player or two through waivers.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out over the next couple of days.
