New Jersey Devils head coach Pete DeBoer spoke to the media today and had some pretty interesting things to say about how he'll utilize some of his players in preseason and beyond.
Here's a summary of what DeBoer said along with my thoughts.
- Adam Larsson practiced on the top power play unit today. I really like the decision by DeBoer to try him out there. Larsson has excellent vision, is a good passer and has a pretty underrated shot. I think he could be an effective player on the power play and I like that DeBoer is going to give him a shot there. Larsson will play in every situation this season and considering he's in a contract year, he can't ask for much more.
- DeBoer said that Cory Schneider will start Monday and make his first appearance in a game for the Devils. DeBoer hasn't decided if he'll split time with another goaltender yet but if he chooses to do so, it won't be Martin Brodeur. The future hall of famer isn't expected to dress against the New York Rangers.
I like the decision by DeBoer to get Schneider work early and let him get accustomed to the Devils style of play and system. I'm also anxious to see who the backup will be and if he gets any playing time.
- One thing I found really interesting is that DeBoer said Jaromir Jagr, who didn't practice today, might play some point on the power play but won't in 5 vs. 4 situations. I think that's a smart move as a) it's safer to have a defenseman like Larsson playing that role and; b) it will give Larsson more opportunity to see if he can have success in power play situations at the NHL level.
- The Rangers will split duty in goal during Monday's game but Johan Hedberg will not play. Henrik Lundqvist and Cam Talbot will be the Rangers' two goaltenders.
I'll be back tomorrow with a post prior to the Devils - Rangers game.
