Just a few days ago Ilya Kovalchuk retired from the NHL and walked away from the New Jersey Devils.
Kovalchuk's contract had 12 years remaining that would have paid him $77 million over that span.
Many presumed his days in the NHL were done, but apparently that might not be the case. Kovalchuk may return to the NHL in a few years, according to a report from Russia citing quotes from his sister.
While it sounds far fetched now, it seems like that may indeed be the plan. Kovalchuk's contract with SKA of the KHL is just four years in length. He'll reportedly earn $60 million in untaxed money over that span.
If Kovalchuk was indeed planning for a return to the NHL in four years, he'd be just about to turn 34 years of age when his contract expires.
