Update - It has been reported that the Flames and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester have been in discussion about a trade, and further that there is interest from six teams around the NHL. While the teams have not been mentioned so far, I could imagine that the Leafs, Bruins, Canadiens, Oilers, and Kings would be on the list. Possibly even the Blues.

After moving their captain to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Jay Feaster and the Calgary Flames are now ready to start moving pieces in an attempt to stock up for an organizational overhaul.

The Boston Bruins have lost in the trade bid for Iginla, and as a result, have allowed an Eastern competitor become even stronger. With their recent acquisitions, the Penguins have really vamped up their roster and are preparing themselves for a very solid run for the cup this year. The Boston Bruins had the same plans in mind, although have not upgraded their roster as much as their rivals, so far.

Boston has a few options available to them still, and I could see them having interest in one of Jay Bouwmeester, Mark Giordano, or Lee Stempniak for added depth. Jay Feaster is likely still working the phones as I feel the Iginla move is a precursor to an inevitable fire sale from the Flames as teams try and make last minute adjustments to their rosters as the trade deadline day looms.

Speaking of Bouwmeester, I could see a fit with him and the Ottawa Senators as they try and ensure themselves a playoff spot this year. Just a thought...

Most fans are arguing that the Flames were fleeced by the Pittsburgh Penguins, but at the end of the day Jay Feaster’s options for possible destinations for Iginla were very limited…we knew this…Shero knew this…everyone knew this. Calgary was at a disadvantage going into trade discussions and they took as much as they could for their longstanding captain. They will have two first round picks in the 2013 NHL draft which is expected to be a rather deep draft. Having two extra prospects in their cupboards and two first round picks this year is a good start to their “rebuild”.

Jarome Iginla is worth much, much more than what the Flames received, but the situation at hand did not allow for the Flames to receive his full value in a trade as mentioned above, in addition to the fact the he will likely walk from Pittsburgh once the Playoffs are over…cup or no cup. The Penguins would have been foolish to offer a prospect like Maatta for a few months of Iginla’s services. They knew the Flames needed as much as they could get for Iginla, and they offered as much as they thought was fair given the circumstance.

Tough break for a guy who is going to be a huge addition to the Pens cup run, but the Flames are finally taking the steps needed to be competitive again down the road. I could see the following players receiving interest from teams around the league:

- Stempniak
- Bouwmeester
- Giordano
- Tanguay
- Babchuk
- Cammalleri

What do you guys think? Would any of the above mentioned players interest you?
