After getting dealt to Tampa Bay in exchange for Steve Downie, the Lightning have now moved Kyle Quincey to Detroit for what appears to be Detroit's 1st round pick, as per TSN's Bob McKenzie via Twitter.

UPDATE: 4:32 PM EST
Minor league prospect defenseman Sebastian Piche also heads to Tampa Bay in the deal.

At first blush, it seems like a bit of an overpayment by the Red Wings to re-acquire Quincey, after having lost him via a waiver claim by the Los Angeles Kings. Then again, with Detroit's 1st round pick likely being in the late 20's or higher and a decent crop of prospects already within the system, the Red Wings likely felt moving the 1st round pick would not harm them long-term.

Nevertheless, the Red Wings have been adamant in recent weeks about upgrading their 3rd pairing and adding a defenseman to potentially play on the 2nd PP unit. Quincey provides them with a solid #5 d-man, with the potential to become their #4 if/when Brad Stuart departs during the off-season.

With Quincey being a restricted free agent, the Red Wings will be able to see how things play out with Stuart first in the off-season. At a salary of $3.125 million per season, Quincey might be an adept signing to fill in for Stuart going forward. It seems very unlikely they would bring both Quincey and Stuart back next season unless Nicklas Lidstrom does not return and the Red Wings aren't successful in their pursuit for a top-2 defenseman such as Ryan Suter.
