About a month ago, I asked for your help to lend your support for the University of Alabama Huntsville hockey team. A team with a 30 year history of college hockey, establishing Huntsville, Alabama as the “Hockey Capital of the South.” I wanted to give you an update on the struggle.

The Save UAH Hockey movement has been successful on almost all fronts. The group has raised monetary commitments (in excess of a half a million dollars) to lift the financial burden of the hockey program from the university. The group has found that a conference affiliation is within the university’s grasp, all they have to do is apply. This year’s Frozen Four is being hosted by UAH.

So where is the issue here? Why is Interim Chancellor Portera waiting for? It’s time to lift the cloud from this program and reiterate the university’s support for NCAA Division I hockey. Interim Chancellor Portera has used the lack of conference affiliation as a serious problem for this program… so why hasn’t he allowed the UAH Hockey program to apply for conference membership?

Many people close to the situation believe the decision has been made, and was made months ago by an interim chancellor that simply doesn't understand the situation or the impact of his decision on the city where he is not a resident. The Save UAH Hockey group has given strong rebuttals to each and every concern raised by the Interim Chancellor. Dr. Portera doesn't understand that NCAA Division I hockey cannot be replaced by club hockey, it is simply not the same.

The time has come to make the right decision, for the university, for the hockey program and for Huntsville. Interim Chancellor Portera, make the decision and Save Division I hockey at UAH.
