Game Seven

Game seven… That’s all you have to say. One game for the Cup… One game to settle this contentious, nasty series… and one thing is for sure. The hero tonight probably will not be named Sedin, or Chara, or Burrows, or Bergeron. If we have learned anything about game sevens, they are normally settled by an unlikely name. Names like Michael Rupp or Ruslan Fedotenko or Aaron Ward.

The two other keys? Goaltending… obviously… and scoring first. Not only has the home team won every game of this series, but the team who scores first has also won every game.

The goaltending storyline is pretty clear, the Conn Smythe favorite is Boston’s Tim Thomas, who has simply been spectacular in this series. His .962 save percentage and a 1.34 GAA has been simply been superb. Robert Luongo though has been dominant at home. His series GAA has been 3.49 and a pedestrian .896 save percentage, but given his terrible play at the TD Garden, his play at home has been incredible. Immovable object, meet irresistible force.

Both teams are beaten, bloody and tired. Both teams are missing key elements either because of suspension or injury. Today will take forever…

It’s time to drop the puck… we’ll be previewing game seven on SlapShot Radio tonight. Tune in at 6pm on Nashville’s Sports Radio WNSR 560, you can listen online at www.wnsr.com.
