Monday Notes

After taking the weekend off to celebrate my wedding anniversary... time to get back at it with some random notes.

- Three days into training camp and the first injury is on the books. Roman Josi broke a wrist during Sunday’s scrimmage and is listed as out for 4-6 weeks. A very bad (pardon the pun) break for the young player, missing training camp is never a good thing when trying to make a team.

- Really??? The NHL now says that the penalty box antics of Duncan Keith in Game four of last season’s playoffs was illegal and will be penalized. Does it make a difference? In game 5 Keith was on the ice for two of Chicago’s goals, including the fateful game tying goal with 13 seconds left in the third. To be fair, he also was on the ice for three of Nashville’s goals. It’s fun to talk about, but in the end… it really doesn’t make a difference.

- On that same subject… In my role as PA Announcer, I hear most of the barking that goes on around the penalty box. Most players just sit there and ignore what goes on around them. Good advice… however, some players get very creative in their insults. I have heard combinations of words that still have me scratching my head.

- Columbus has signed goaltender Steve Mason to a two year contract extension. Getting him back to where he was in his rookie year will be key if the Blue Jackets hope to compete.

- Speaking of Columbus.... Sheldon Souray is the topic of a lot of talk in Ohio. He may be a good add for a team that needs blueline help.

- The chatter about officials has been under the radar during the offseason, however, negotiations between the NHL and the NHL Official’s Association are continuing. The NHL refs will work preseason games without a contract… for now. The question becomes, for how long?

- Glad to see Penn State take the plunge to go NCAA D1 in hockey. Can a Big 10 hockey conference be far behind? While we're at it... Hey SEC, time to get with it. All of your schools have robust club programs as we stand right now... I'm just sayin'!

- Pleanty of preseason puck to be had on NHL Network. Their first game is live coverage of the Devils/Flyers on Tuesday night at 6pm CDT. The first of 35 preseason games being shown on the channel.

- Interesting take in today’s Globe and Mail on Vancouver’s blueline additions, with plenty of the typical tired potshots at “non-traditional” markets.

- 19 days till Opening Night.
