The Battle of the Buffaslug

A fascinating conflict is raging among fans of the Buffalo Sabres. Quite a few of them are actively engaged in expressing their displeasure at a proposed change to the Sabres logo, in what I've seen from leaks to the web, the fans have an excellent point. The new logo that is making the rounds on the internet is... well... interesting.

I appreciate that incorporating an animal that is closely aligned with a city makes sense... most of the past logos for the Sabres have included a Buffalo, however, the attempt to create a dynamic, forward thrusting logo has resulted in a concept that really doesn't seem to make sense, a logo that many Sabre fans have derisively called the "Buffaslug." What makes that description funny is that it is a fair characterization.

The battle of the "Buffaslug" is being fought on several fronts, a freelance graphic designer by the name of John Slabyk has developed a labor of love with a profit motive. A website called the "Blue and Gold Project" at www.newblueandgold.com. This site has some very attractive uniforms and logos designed by a guy that while no longer living in Buffalo, seems to have the city (and the Sabres) still deep in his heart. Using an updated gold (reminiscent of the St. Louis Rams color scheme) it is a fitting update to the Sabres original look.

There is a petition attached to this effort with over 12000 signatures, requesting Sabres management to not only return to the blue and gold color scheme, but to consider the logo designs of Mr. Slabyk.

Another site dedicated to eradicating this new logo is www.fixthelogo.com ... This site also has a petition attached with a little more direct language, and almost 30,000 signatures at the time of this writing.

Fans take the look of their team very personally. The color scheme, the uniform design, the logo… all are very important to a fan’s perception of the team. The ownership of the Buffalo Sabres can really make a statement to their fans in how they handle this rebellion... the next few weeks will show exactly what that statement will be.

So… what’s your take? What do you think of the proposed new Sabres logo?
