Here it is, night of nights, this is it, turn up the lights, and oh what heights we'll hit, on with the NHL Awards!

O.K. So it's not as catching as Merrie Melodies' theme but all the same, Mick and I were at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto for the 2008 NHL Awards.

And as we so often do, we live the "behind the scenes media life". So upon arrival, we picked up our credentials and then headed to the basement of the Theatre where we interviewed many of the nominees. Some guys were very friendly, some were all-business and some where in a hurry to get out of there but in the end, we got some great sound for NHL Home Ice.

We then headed out to mingle with the fans watching the players and the beautiful people walk the red carpet. And who knew that standing on the outside of the carpet we'd be recognized. But we were....by Franco from Long Island. Always great to meet listeners and after some great conversation, it was back to the lounge to watch he show and hear the winners as they came through.

Lines of the night:

"I wanted to make speech longer but my english is short", said Datsyuk upon accepting his Selke Trophy.

When asked how he's spent his time since winning the Cup, Datsyuk said: "I think you would have to ask my wife. There's been parties...I remember going into parties but I'm not sure how I woke up at home"

Surprise of the night:

Two really....all due respect to Bruce Boudreau...glad he won...well deserved....but for Mike Babcock to finish 3rd in voting tells me that the Jack Adams continues to be the "Coach of the most improved team award".

The other one was that Martin Brodeur won the Vezina...sorry Marty, but Nabokov had better numbers and your winning it makes the fan in me feel a little ripped off...and Kern agrees.
