XM 204's Kern and Rossy at the awards

Here it is, night of nights, this is it, turn up the lights, and oh what heights we'll hit, on with the NHL Awards!

O.K. So it's not as catching as Merrie Melodies' theme but all the same, Mick and I were at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto for the 2008 NHL Awards.

And as we so often do, we live the "behind the scenes media life". So upon arrival, we picked up our credentials and then headed to

Olie: Don't Quit!

When I read Tarik El-Bashir's piece on the Washington Post website, something I suspected was coming finally happened: Olaf Kolzig will not be back with the Washington Capitals.

And while I try to always be as professional and arm's-length with NHL players, when it comes to Olie, there is a bit of a personal bias.

I have dealt with Olie many times in the last year and a bit, as he was a pla

Rubbish in Philly

I was reading a column in the Philadelphia Daily News and was astounded at how much of a whiner the writer was. And in my experience, Flyers fans are the farthest thing from whiners.

Here is the column followed by my thoughts on the whole thing.

After reading Sam’s piece, I have to ask: Sam…Is this something you wrote to be inflammatory or do you really feel this way?

Because if you

Senators Post Mortem

As the seconds ticked away in game 4 between Pittsburgh and Ottawa, in fact, maybe as the seconds ticked away in game 2, the question that is now on everyone’s tongue first reared its ugly head: What went wrong with the Ottawa Senators?

It’s a question whose answer has so many factors that to throw out just one answer would be wrong.

Here are the issues I feel contributed to Ottawa’s d

Simon says....oops!

Just when you thought it was safe for your kids to watch an Islanders game, Chris Simon strikes again.

This time, he didn't use his stick, his elbow, his knee or his fists....nope...this time he used his skate blade.

Of course, when I first read about this my mind wandered to the classic line from "Happy Gilmore":

Now, Simon did not seemingly try to stab Jarkko Ruuttu, but he did try to

Boulerice cross check on Kessler...

Question:

Is it time for the NHL to abandon its attempts to "send a message" to all players that head shots will not be tollerated and rather focus their efforts on really punishing the offenders in these incidents?

Rather than try to influence other players into avoiding future incidents like this (which does not seem to work anyway), maybe just start suspending guys in 20 to 30 game incr

Tkachuk dealt back to Blues (NHL.com)

Tkachuk dealt back to Blues
Shawn P. Roarke | NHL.com Senior Writer Jun 26, 2007, 4:13 PM EDT

This weekend, the St. Louis Blues used a good portion of the bounty they received from this past season’s deadline-day trade of power forward Keith Tkachuk to restock their developmental system. Tuesday, the Blues welcomed Tkachuk back into the fold.

Way to go Ducks!

I want to tip my hat to the Ducks and their management & ownersip group.

You have put together a fantastic, hard working team and they earned a great victory.

The Senators ended the season on a sour note but should also be proud of the run they went on.

Now for a few specific thoughts:

Teemu Selanne: I was thrilled to see you raise the Cup

Brad May: I thought you were the most g

Pronger vs Pronger

In the matter of the Pronger elbow on McAmmond, a few things shock me.

First, that 4 officials on the ice either did not see the incident or did see it and did not feel it warranted a penalty.

Second, that shortly after the play a Senators forward punched Pronger in the back of the head directly in front of a referee and there was no call.

Third, that some media types were still using the

Finally! Or is it? Depends on who you ask.

As some of you already know, I am an Ottawa born hockey fanatic.

After growing up a fan of the Maple Leafs (thanks to Gramps), I switched loyalties once my hometown got an NHL franchise of its own (so did Gramps).

And not long after their arrival, I began covering the team for my college radio station.

Soon thereafter, I was working on their radio broadcasts as the intermission and post-g
