The Capitals have signed their 2007 First round Draft Pick, Karl Alzner to a 3 year deal.

On Carter and Philly...

A few good sources at this hour are telling me that it is looking likely that by the end of this three-day weekend in the US, Jeff Carter will have a big fat new contract with the Flyers.

On Nieds and Teems

Also, this morning I spoke with Brian Burke who said to me, "we told them that we want a decision sometime prior to the draft." Adding, "we did that dance once, we won't be doing it again."

more to come....

From Yesterday....

Rolston

A few sources are telling me that Brian Rolston, one of the more attractive UFAs due to his solid two-way play, is looking likely to return to Minnesota. That is not to say that other teams aren't going to make pitches that may make this decision a tough one for Brian, but most of my sources are leaning towards Brian returning due to the fact he really loves playing in Minnesota.

Gaborik

Although some sources are saying pretty much the same thing regarding Gaborik's desire to remain a "Wild" (?) reports are that some very serious trade offers may make things complicated including a mega offer from a "team in the Northeast" that I believe to be either Buffalo or Boston. There is one scenario where Boston would attempt to unite Hossa and Gaborik in Boston.

Umberger for Suter?

From all I am hearing Jeff Carter wants to and will indeed be a Flyer for years to come. However, the Flyers are in an interesting spot with RJ. While it is hard to imagine a Vanek-like offer sheet coming in for RJ, it is entirely possible that Holmgren and Poile (two long-time friends) could make a move that would clear up issues for each of them.

The Flyers, in need of more defensive speed, could send RJ to Nashville for Suter. Nashville needs more size and scoring upfront. I could see both players (both of whom are RFAs) thriving in their new surroundings. I see RJ Umberger very much as a Keith Primeau in his early years in Detroit. He scores the same kinds of goals, is very strong on the puck, and we are just starting to see glimpses of a bigger scoring potential. It is all there for RJ, but Philly's youth and depth may keep him from ever seeing all of that potential. As Primeau went to Carolina and became a star, I coud see RJ in Nashville do the same. And Suter, an American kid that Holmgren is very aware of, could really help solidify the need for more speed on the defensive end. The Preds have so many young d-men and with Weber demanding a huge salary this summer and other guys coming up, the Preds could part ways with Suter.

Liles to Buffalo (e4)

Much has been made of the fact that Ryan Miler and J-M Liles are very close. With Miller's contract being at the forefront of talk this year, an with the Sabres trying to sure up the speed and transition game that was lost with Campbell's departure, this makes plenty of sense. Liles' stock has fallen a bit with people saying he has not grown into that early great potential he showed in Colorado. I think Liles could get a huge benefit from a new place with the familiar Miller near by.

Prospal to NJ (e3)

Entering the playoffs I was firmly of the belief that Prospal needed to be kept. Vinny played a huge role in not only re-vitalizing Briere's game but actually propelling Philly into the playoffs. Once in the playoffs however Prospal's game did fall off a bit. I believe the Flyers felt so as well. Vinny is a great player still however and should be regarded as one of the top UFA's. I keep hearing the NJ Devils name being brought up. I have also heard other teams as well, but none to the point of an e-rating as of yet.

more to come.
