There's not a Hugh Jessiman in the bunch.
- bodiva88

That is a completely valid point. Downie and Sbisa at this point are serviceable NHL players, certainly not superstars but not Jessimans either. I am still bullish on JVR long term, and he will be a very good player in my opinion, but could have done better it seems.

well, Murray has pissed off Ryan big time as the kid is annoyed & pissed that his name is being thrown around again, so he may not have the luxury.

it's not like that team has a world of depth to piss off a big bargaining chip like they did.
All they need is for him is to go public that he wants out, and then Murray's price comes down some what.

- puckhead17

Murray can also say no, he's not trading him. Murray needs to get a certain value in his mind to make the deal obviously. And if he can't get what he wants, then he shouldn't trade him.

Onlyme will tell, but there are many Canes fans here in Raleigh thinking that the Canes overpaid for Staal. Of course, I think the Canes are in a position in which they know they need to make the playoffs this year as the memories of winning the cup in 2006 is starting to wear thin in attracting fans.
- ncflyer27613

I agree. Suffer is not getting the credit he deserves. Clearly not a Jordan Staal but the add ins in in the deal were pretty steep.

OK, weighing in on the pick. Like a lot of you guys, I really don't like the move, particularly at #20. As MJL, we're not really qualified to say if Laughton will be better or worse than Maata or Finn or anyone else. But lots of other scouts had him ranked much lower, so that needs to factor in as well.

Also, a lot of people seem to be given Homer the benefit of the doubt because of previous draft success in the first round. I agree to some extent. But playing devil's advocate for a second, let's look at that (including time as understudy to Clark)

2011 Couturier - Awesome pick. Almost impossible not to take there, but he gets an A there.

2010 / 2009 - No picks

2008 Sbisa - Seems to be a decent pick. Coulda had Eberle, Ennis, Carlson but a better than a bunch of other guys drafted after.

2007 JVR - Jury still out, but was definitely ranked in top 3. I personally wanted Couture or Turris (.500 batting average). JVR will likely be 5-10 best player in that draft.

2006 G - Obviously the pick that earned the reputation.

2005 Downie - OK player. A "Flyers" player. I think he was a reach tho given his background. Not too many good players picked later, though coulda had Neal or Stasny.

2004 - no pick

2003 - Carter/Richards - Again, another draft that made their bones so to speak. But really, it was almost impossible to not screw up In the 1st round in 2003. And I'd argue that Carter was an ok pick (coulda had Parisi, Getzlaff, Brown, etc) and Richards was pretty good value there.

My point is...they have done ok in last 10 years, but are really not prospect whisperers either.

- TheGreat28[

Let's see, in the mid to late 20s they drafted Richards, Giroux and Downie who is a 20 goal scoring agitator. They got Carter a 40 goal center at 11. Sbisa was also a solid pick at 19.

They do a great job for a team that consistently picks in the 20s

Yes, Murray can say no, but putting the kid on a "yard sale" blanket again? When they have enough problems, Schultz leaving, no depth, etc..

Dumb move by Murray

Maybe ok is a little bit of an understatement, but I disagree with phenomenal as well. I'm rating the Flyers draft ability, not the players they got per se. Yes, it is easy to play armchair quarterback. But I'm looking at who they drafted relative to others drafted after them, need, strength of draft, scouting service rankings, etc.

Here's a list of Flyers 1st-round forward picks and the pick that directly followed:

Jeff Carter/Hugh Jessiman
Mike Richards/Anthony Stewart
Steve Downie/Vladimir Mihalik
Claude Giroux/Semyon Varlamov
JvR/Kyle Turris

It's a dumb move to not trade a good young player if they don't get what they feel is a good deal? And let's not forget how rumors happen. And that rumors don't necessarily tell the complete picture.

Seems to be. I think the inability to cultivate any defensemen over the course of 2+ decades is factoring in. I mean when the best homegrown d-man over the last 20 odd years is Chris Therien, you got issues.
- PLindbergh31

just looked at throwers profile...mystified why they would pick the goalie they did over a guy like him but it appears that the flyers are to the point of being intimidated out of drafting these kids when you go that far off the board...which rarely turns out well.

Isnt the Flyers draft ability, not the players they got per se, one and the same. How are they different. Just because there was a better player available in hindsight, doesn't make a pick a so so pick. Carter is a very good 2 way NHL 1st line Winger. That makes it a good pick.
- MJL

Not when you consider opportunity cost. For example, about 6 or 7 years ago I got two stock "tips" - Qualcomm and Apple, the first from my cousin who works there and 2nd from a colleague who is really savvy about stocks. I chose Qualcomm. Made a bit of money, so it was a good pick. But I could have made a killing in Apple.

Yeah, like Croce I could have chosen Skinny Water (actually was thinking about it but passed). But picking Qualcomm doesn't make me Warren Buffet either.

I know someone who has seen Stolarz play he's from Jackson, NJ, and he says this kid is a total project, and was never even the best goaltender on his youth team. Folks were shocked he was taken in the second round. Projected to be selected between the 5-6 rounds.

You can't just pick the player immediately after. That is too small a sample size, ignores team needs, and ignores the "Howson" effect. Go with 10 after, or even 5 after. That is much more representative as those players should generally be comparables in scouting reports.

This is Hockey, not Stocks. And opportunity cost has nothing to do with it. Just because Parise was available, doesn't make Carter a so so pick.

Fixed?

As for goalie, of the ones they've picked since Hexy, have any gone on to another organization and been anything special? It isn't patience to develop, it's identify and draft. But maybe you know yourselves as an organization. Choose what you are good at choosing and trade that for whatever else you need. It feels like Nashville is the yang to their yin.

- bodiva88

not really.
Actually, there aren't many goalies drafted in the first round since Brodeur up to 2010 that have actually been legitimate no. 1 goalies.
Brodeur, Luongo, kari lethonen (arguable), ward, Fleury, Cory Shenider?, Price, Rask, Bernier?, varlamov (arguable).

A bunch turned out to be nothing more than a journeymen backup at best.

Some of the best goalies ended up getting picked in the later parts of the draft, and all of the teams passed up on them several times over. It's a total crap shoot.
