I'll start with some responses:

I was just bluffing. I loved Empire Strikes Back, and its a toss up, but I am super partial to Return of the Jedi....

I can see this. Jedi was my favorite growing up. Having watched it recently, though, it comes across as the weakest entry in the OT. I think that's more of a testament to the other two movies, though. Minor flaws and a few dated looking sequences are more than made up for with an excellent action and a final confrontation for Luke that even a four bladed lightsaber couldn't trump. It's tough to live up to expectation in a trilogy, to end it properly. Jedi somehow did it.

I can see this. Jedi was my favorite growing up. Having watched it recently, though, it comes across as the weakest entry in the OT. Ill have to admit it has been too long since I have sat down and watched 4-6. I was never a big fan of New Hope, so it was always between ESB and ROTJ.

the whole Jar Jar Binks destroyed for me...I was like who the pluck is this thing/guy/creature.

I've added great Star Wars documentary stuff I'll link to in the first post if there's interest. Lengthy, but worth watching. Some is informational, some is just funny.

I'm more of an Expanded universe type guy. The movies are great, but the story line after the movies is just as strong, probally beacuse Lucas isn't writing it...lol

I'm picky about EU. As will all things, there are good parts and bad parts. I tend to be less concerned with how everything fits together, and more so with whether the individual work is of quality.

I do sometimes wonder if the prequels ever had a chance to be good, I'll give it to Lucas that he was facing tremendous expectations in making a trilogy consistent with a universe that's expanded so much since the original movies hit. Still, I maintain he's just not a very good film maker.

I chalk it up to this:

Lucas Prequels is to the original trilogy as Tolken's Similiarian is to the LOTR trilogy...

Everything written between 1983 and 1998 was good stuff, except for The Crystal Star.

West End Games' d6 Star Wars role-playing games material is also very good to read/enjoy. The Wizards of the Coast d20 RPG never captured the spirit of the milieu the same way.

Maybe they're consistent with EU, but they utterly failed as individual films, and as a film trilogy away from the criteria of Star Wars.

Here's something I really don't understand: Why did they pick the three periods in time they did to set those movies. The way I see it, the three most important parts of that era are this:
-The training of Anakin Skywalker in the Jedi arts
-The actual waging of the Clone Wars
-The persecution of the Jedi and rise of the Empire

Why, then, did George choose to set the movies exactly between all these things? We're always told about how Obi Wan and Anakin are friends, how Anakin has become a powerful Jedi, how the Clone Wars have ravaged the galaxy and weakened the Republic, but we never actually see these things happen. We get a bunch of lightsaber fights and expository dialogue, but it was never as exciting or memorable as this

You make good points here, but they are in taken in hind sight. I think the reasoning behind why he chose these time frames has more to do with setting up how the Republic Fell and the Empire rose, while still following the plight of Anakin.

Take that back! The Silmarillion is amazing.

I read the the LOTR trilogy 3 times... couldnt stomach the Silmarillion...
