From my own experience in marketing and the stories from friends who have worked in it, I guarantee an artist or a team or someone came to them with the design on the right and said "lets do this." and listed off why

but the HiPPO in charge of design booted it because of either 1) the final design was their brainchild or 2) "the original is too cartoony! we gotta update it for live action in 2019!" and that got mandated and forced through.

- Lindenis#1

All they had to do was use the character template that's been in use since 1991.

focus group found #1 more human looking, thus people connected with the character more

focus groups are horrid and unreliable

the fact that some companies still rely on them to the extent they do is embarrassing.

100% someone on their design team said that

and 100% someone who makes a lot more money came back with "Well Marvel updated their characters to look 21st century" and that basically ended the conversation and the design team complied because they aren't paid for opinions

if you hate people and think everyone is an idiot a career in marketing seems completely ideal.

favourite experiences from marketing

"here is all the research and info and reasoning and stuff for why we gonna do the thing this way"

client: "okay but i want to do this instead. *gives terrible dumb idea*"

tell the client why that is dumb. client refuses because they have a brain baby they won't let go.

worst was working with municipal governments

some of the best intro meetings I ever had were when Twitter and Facebook were just starting to kick off for marketing and every company from payday loans to greasy spoon restaurants to basement accounting firms were like

"we want to do social media! twitter and facebook! those things. that social media sure is popular with the kids."

and their entire idea was just that if they paid us to open Facebook/Twitter/Instagram accounts and post... something? then they'd get a huge amount of customers becauseits that new social media that everyone is doing.

so then you'd come back with a different plan and they'd be like "its just social media though. should be free though. why does it cost money?" and you'd bash your head against your filing cabinet

now there are surely things you can do for low cost, but it was all like they thought one facebook post or tweet going viral was easy to do and you're into smooth sailing. not that its a constant upkeep to post and manage all day

the last time i saw something about this poop i ended up going down a rabbit hole that lead to some story about some dude that reviews diapers. not adult diapers because of physical health issues, but baby diapers because he's in urgent need of a therapist.

that had me shaken for like a week.

it's scary how easy it has been for companies to just hire someone to make memes on their social media and how well it's working.

that's not the worst strategy, and there are companies you can outsource that poop to where they pay some college kid in experience dollars (gross) to post the same poop across 20 accounts,

its just that these companies were like "why is it so expensive?" as if they just thought all you had to do was open a facebook page and it would just accrue likes because it existed

oh you need a content plan, a coordinator/manager, design/creative and money so that your post doesn't get buried?

"but just do the twitter tho"
