I just wanted to bring light of something very important . In that we all directly or indirectly have had a friend or a family member in one way or another affected by some sort of illness. Today my fellow posters I am asking you all today to take a read of the following and help me raise some awareness and funding to a good cause. We have an avid poster here who could use our help. This is all to help his loving wife Karen . I hope you all take the time to read the following and if you could be compassionate and lend a couple dollars or whatever you may be able to afford in helping a good guy and his family seek the treatment his wife deserves.

Help "Liberate" Karen from MS
Karen was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2005 but the symptoms started years earlier.

On November 21, Karen is traveling to Costa Rica to receive the liberation therapy treatment on November 25. She will spend another week in recovery and hopes to return to Golden, B.C with improvements to her health.

Originally Karen was able to work but for the past two-and-a-half years Karen has been unable to work because of pain and fatigue associated with MS.

Karen loved her work in the social service field. She worked most recently for the Golden School District helping children and their families and before that at the Golden Women's Resource Centre. Karen currently volunteers as the co-chair of the Women's Centre's Board of Directors.

The costs of medical treatment and travel are in excess of $16,000. While this seems high it is reflective of the costs of medical care outside of the country.

Karen's family and friends are hoping to raise money to help offset the costs of the treatment. Karen's worked hard to help families in Golden and Ontario and many people would like to help her during her time of need.

If you would like to help please attend one of our upcoming fundraisers, or leave a donation through "Liberation for Karen" PayPal account.

Our Positions:

1.Liberation Therapy has shown promising results in helping people with Multiple Sclerosis.

2.The Liberation Treatment is currently unavailable in Canada so patients must pay out of pocket for medical treatment and travel costs.

3.Multiple Sclerosis is unpredictable. Treatment now makes sense for Karen before any further deterioration can occur.

there are a number of other ways to treat MS conventionally with medicine available in the US and canada and do not require controversial treatment options. Recently people have been responding well to adding a narcolepsy drug to their normal MS related drugs.

the reason they are promoting the drugs over "Liberation" is due to the bottom line of the pharmaceutical companies. There are over 485,000 people in the US and Canada suffering from MS, with the average monthly cost of medication being $2,500 USD per month. I'm not a math genius or anything but I think that adds up to a poop load of reasons not to promote a possible one time fix of $1500 (the cost of doing the procedure in NA).

There have been several proven results for this treatment outside of MS, migraine headache sufferers are already using the same procedure and getting amazing results while cutting down on the need for prescription drugs. If a person finds they have narrowed veins that are causing headaches, vertigo or any other conditions they can get this procedure anywhere in NA UNLESS they have been previously diagnosed with MS then they are not allowed to have the procedure done. Seems like discrimination to me and there are some cases of people suing there healthcare providers on this ground.

The other main problem with getting the Liberation treatment certified is the Neurologists, Zamboni's findings are threatening to take this field away from them and moving towards a vascular procedure. The effect here is that it takes away millions of dollars in research funding from one medical profession and moves it to another.

I am not saying that this is a 100% proven procedure, but 90% of people with MS that are tested have narrowing of the veins and in cases where Liberation was performed over 70% of the patients reported significant improvement in their symptoms. Two years ago we had no other options than my wife being heavily medicated and having to suffer through a lot of her symptoms that include pain, muscle spasticity, crippling fatigue, and vision problems. Now there is a chance that we could get relief through this surgery, what would you do?

That being said, it is going to be hard to maintain my troll persona in here.

If there was a drug that curse AIDS a company could easily produce it because they would have free reign on that drug for a number of years before a patent runs out. If she needs to raise money for this treatment again its no one time fix. No one company can collude to hold back a potential life saving/altering drug because another company would want to get the profits of that drug on their bottom line. This is the same rationale as why OPEC doesn't have a good hand on how much oil is exported because any one of those countries will be willing to make a buck.
I agree I would try all means to get relief by any means necessary if it was someone in my family and they weren't responding to convential treatment. Every year when I do the MS walk I see the same people with the same disease doing a pretty strenuous hike and much of that is thanks to the medicine they are on. With a disease that is grouped into a handful of subtypes I just find it hard to believe that this guy says 70% have this condition with their veins.

PS, this is probably the most grown up conversation on HB right now
