Is there really something to say about the Islanders in recent years though?

Every blog should read "Isles Blow, discuss".

After watching last night's game, I'm still puzzled as to why people think the Oilers "have a future". I can see it coming from an Oilers fans who is desperate to find some sort of positive. But if you look at it factually.

I'll agree they appear to have some good offensive raw talent, but the current Oilers management has not developed a young player above a mediocre level in over a decade.

Take a look at the young players they currently have had for a few seasons now. Cogliano has been a bust. Gagner is regressing alarmingly. Dubnyk and Deslauriers are hardly worthy of 1st and 2nd round picks. Gilbert has flamed out. They turned Penner from a 24 yr old with 29 goals into a shadow. Brule has become worse than Cogliano. Smid is a 9th overall pick who has 1 goal in 4 Oiler seasons. I probably don't have to mention O'Sullivan, Schremp and Nilsson.

Add the Horcoff contract to the way Pronger, Souray and Pat Quinn were handled. How can anyone have any faith their current group of young players will not suffer the same fate as long as Kevin Lowe is steering the ship?

Until I see any different, I'll just assume the Oilers will take Hall and his 100 pt potential and turn him into a perennial 70 pt a season player. That's hardly a future.

Seriously, what a (frank)ing useless piece of poop that guy is. Wow. Not only does he misses the net 99 out 100 times, but he also finds a way to take a stupid (frank)ing penalty call, and then, proceed to score in his own (frank)ing net BEFORE the penalty is called.

DiP is not the answer. And yes, I have gone on record several times singing the praises of Garth's ability to draft and work trades on draft day. There is some serious young talent in the Islanders well....BUT teams need balance and leaders and veterans and stability in Net to give that young talent a shot at bringing their game to the NHL level. They need mentors. And perhaps most importantly they need to be around teams who are "playing to win" and have a enironment where there is NO acceptance of losing.

This is NOT fantasy hockey. It's real. Tavares has the greatest upside but is also my biggest worry. You can get "stuck" if you begin to accept losing. Accept the fact you can't compete.

Roloson was one of the only hopes around that. that is why I admires Garth for spending all the money in goal he did. Garth of course knows this.

And while I don't yet know if Charles has forced this trade, I can't help but think he has. And that is sad. Have met Charles. And he was very into his team. Very into Long Island. I have defended him because of that impression. I have met probably 2/3rd of the owners in the NHL and Charles was one I actually believed in.

however, ever since the LHP has fallen apart it feels like every move made on LI is a big FU to the people who blocked the LHP from happening. And I think that sucks.

End of rant.

The Dance is on in Calgary...

I have been waiting on a Flames source all day because I woke up this morning to the following text, "We won't be waiting long in Calgary. I will have more later if I can."

This is the way it goes sometimes. Sources can talk "to a point." Then they either get vague, or they go completely silent. The latter has happened in Calgary. And as an old friend, and Hall of Fame Hockey Writer, taught me....Silence is often the biggest tell you can get.

This is true with some of my sources more than others. A common mode of communication is silence, especially among GMs. If I ask a them a question they will either deny it or say nothing, with the understanding that them saying nothing is saying something, because denials are easy, and no one, well almost no one will say , "YES WE ARE SO TRYING TO TRADE HIM!"

Denials are far more common than silence btw. I probably get 15 denials for every 1 silent reply.

That being said, I know these sources have far more pressing situations than talking to me, so I give them several hours, sometimes a day even, to NOT respond before assuming a reply is silent.

However, if I ask again, and I get a reply to something completely off topic...then I know they got the other question....they just won't comment on it.

So in response to my Calgary source, I asked a very specific question in order to get denial or silence in return. Following a lead from earlier I asked, "Is it possible that we are about to see one of the core players in Calgary moved out?"

So I am sure many of you are confused now, but combining this methodology with the morning text "We won't be waiting long now in Calgary" tells me something could be very close to happening.

That was almost 11 hours ago. Nothing until a few minutes ago.

"Boy, NJ looks lost out there tonight."

To repeat...If I get a reply to something else completely off topic, then I know they got the other question and they just won't comment on it. So there was no denial to my question, "Is Calgary about to move a core player?"

No response to that. But he got the question. That much we know.

My digging from today with Calgary hasn't turned up much. I found out the Flames and Lightning have had discussions in the past few days. As well as the Flames and Panthers. Two Florida teams...interesting, but not a lot of information beyond "discussions," and teams have discussions all the time.

So in Calgary that's all I know.

Ek went pretty nuts in the comments
Every now and then I guess I must repeat what EXACTLY happened in the PJ Stock fiasco.

History lesson... PJ Stock's first job in hockey reporting was on my site. When PJ wanted to get into this biz I set him up. When PJ interviewed with Versus to get his first TV gig I sent a letter of recommendation. When PJ did his first game as a commentator on Versus, it was in Philly and I took him to dinner before the game to help him out with the Flyers goings on....

Therefore I am very happy for PJ and his success. He is very good at what it is he is doing, as I always felt he would be.

The "incident" that is often referred to went as follows...

PJ reported on a rumor, and actual rumor, that was told to me "off the record" earlier in the day. Or at east I thought he was reporting on it, because he announced it on his radio show. He later would claim he made it all up....Which was pretty interesting and pretty insightful on his part, but hey I am sure many of you out there have at one point or another thought about something which could be a good trade, and then it comes out as a rumor or actually happens. There are many smart hockeyfans out there and only so many possible deals..

So once I heard PJ reporting the trade rumor, I called my source who told me the trade "off the record" and informed him that PJ Stock was reporting the trade. This is common practice. Something is "Off the Record" until it is leaked.

So then, I went with it. AND I even gave PJ credit, stating "I had heard the same thing off the record."

THEN, PJ decides to say he made it up. and thought it would be fun to mock me. whatever, I know PJ's schtick. I texted him, we laughed, and I even went on his show that same day to discuss what had happened.

I will never know, nor do I honestly care, If PJ did actually make up that rumor and get lucky to hit on an actual rumor, OR as some of my journalism friends have hypothesized he released a rumor that he wasn't aware was "off the record" and to cover his tracks with his sources pretended to have made it up. This because I credited him in my blog and his source wasn't listening to the radio and didn't know ,until I wrote about it, that PJ had put it out there...

so that is the infamous PJ Stock Story.

really not a big deal. really not the smoking gun the ek haters wanted. especially after PJ and I laughed about it on the air...so instead, the haters decided to conveniently leave out certain aspects of it.

haters gonna hate.

I hope this clears this up to some of you who werent around then and just believesd whatever you read elsewhere.

Cheers.

This is just like that time he claimed that he and the guy that runs Spector's hockey are best friends even though that Spector guy used to foot part of the bill for HBhogwash.

My favourite "Ek in the comments" moment was when he made up that crazy formula and Crims egged him on for like 10 pages debating the numbers given to certain teams in a respectful manner. Ek thought he was have the conversation he always dreamed of on this site.
