First of all, anyone who complains that the season is too long isn't a hockey fan. They could play hockey 11 months of the year and I'd be thrilled.

You want a sport to complain about that has a season that is too long and meaningless? How about 162 games of baseball where only 8 of 32 teams make the playoffs?

Secondly, your idea is just nuts Ek. You think the NHL has a hard time attracting new fans now, try explaining that format to a casual fan.

When the NHL does get around to expanding to 32 teams, they will expand the number of playoff teams to 24, but here is how it will be done...

You will have 8 divisions of 4 teams. Each teams will play the three teams in their own division 6 times (18 games), the twelve other teams in their conference 4 times (48 games) and the sixteen teams from the opposite conference once (16 games), for a total of 82 games.

The 4th place team in each divsion will be eliminated, 2 will play 3 (probably in a best of 5), and the winner will play 1, who receives a bye in the first round. The rest of the playoffs will proceed in the current format, where the top seed plays the lowest seed.

I actually believe that they should adopt a similar format for next season, where the top 4 teams in the conference earn byes, and 5 through 12 playoff in a best of 5. (5 vs 12, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10, 6 vs 9).

On average over the last few seasons, 13 to 14 teams that are in the playoffs on November 30 finish the season in the playoffs. That means that the idea that most of the 15 teams in each conference are still in the hunt up until March is an illusion. Having 12 teams make the playoffs puts some substance to that illusion and does in fact add more meaning to the regular season.

As you pointed out with Carolina, under this system, they could have a hurrendous start to the year and still be in the playoff hunt.

It would generate more interest in more markets, add revenue to the owners (most especially to the weaker ones that are being propped up by the league's welfare system) and give us more playoff hockey. The playoffs is where you really showcase your league, so what's wrong with having more of it?

They can compress the scedule every 4 years for 3 weeks to have the Olympics. They can certainly compress the schedule to add a best-of-five to the front of the playoffs.

More playoff teams are coming, and not just to the NHL. I predict that by the end of this decade you'll see 12 teams make the playoffs in MLB, 16 in the NFL and 24 in the NBA and NHL.

This Avs team, has blown people away this year. Exceeding expectations would be an understatement. It has been a pleasure to been an Avs fan. No matter what happens this year, we are still very much in 'rebuild' mode. There is still a lot of youth that is waiting to break into the league with the Colorado Avalanche.

Even during as late as mid- December there were star players I would have loved to have added to this Avs team. For example - Kovalchuk. I was a believer in Wolski, but thought moving him down to the second line, and bringing Kovy into work on the first line would be great. If you asked me today, I would tell you how glad I am; Kovy is not an Av. Not because he's not a great player, but it would have displaced Galiardi, who has been nothing less than stellar. I would also tell you, how glad I am that Mueller is an Av. This guy has been nothing but consistent for us, regardless of what happened with Phoenix, he has been Awesome in Colorado. He brings that ridiculous right handed cannon from the point, and has played with that key thing Wolski lacked: CONSISTENCY.

In my opinion I would like to still get the ball rolling with players coming in and players leaving.

Out: Tucker, Svatos, Koci, Durno, Clark, Salei, Foote, Yelle.

The only 3 players I would have a difficult time letting go would be Clark and Foote and believe it or not Yelle. Clark is without a doubt underrated. He is getting payed some pretty big bucks, but he is a good D-man nonetheless. Foote, is an Av and will be remembered as one for ever. What a great guy on and off the ice. Just another class act that is going to be missed deeply. But unfortunately, this may be his last year, and the torch will have to be passed on to a guy who wears the number 26. Yelle will be missed because he will surely be remembered as an Av, and like Foote is just another class act.

Keep: Hendricks, Mueller, Quincey, Budaj, Weiman.

Hendricks is a great utility player, he'll do what ever you need him to do, and plays with heart. Mueller has been a beast and needs to be locked up. Quincey has been our number one D - man, and like Mueller needs to stay long term. Boods, has been a good guy all year, and knows his role. I like him as a person and a back-up goalie. Weiman - simply to valuable to let go, let him run the show in Lake Erie, he has been the MVP of the team, until a recent industry. Fun filled fact of the day, John Grahame is playing down there right now.

In: Corvo, Konopka, Boogaard.

This Avs team needs another D-man, I know we have lots coming up through the system, but I fear 3 rookies coming in at once, maybe even 4. I would say, start Shattenkirk and Cohen and Gaunce all in the AHL. Start Elliot at the NHL level, playing with Corvo. Corvo, might be looking for a long term contract, and I don't know if I would want to give it to him, it would depend on the asking price. He is my long shot acquisition. I love his style of play and I think he would be perfect in Colorado. Konopka is a utility forward who won't be asking for much, he is good in the face off circle and would simply be our 13/14th forward. Boogaard, I really want a big time bruiser who is going to beat the crap out of anyone. He might only play 25 games, but I still want him, because I really hate playing against him.

Rookies: Elliot, Shattenkirk, Cohen and Gaunce.

I have a feeling all four of these guys are going to be playing pro hockey next year. Personally I am the most excited about Elliot. He is a little bit bigger, can join the rush perfectly and is solid defensively. He has racked up 65 points so far this year with 26 goals, something to be proud of in the WHL. He is being compared to Mike Green and boy would I ever LOVE one of those! Shattenkirk and Cohen are both going to be good D-man, but I would love for them to start in the AHL playing together, and seeing what they can do as a pairing in the pro leagues. Gaunce is going to be a great get in your face, shut you down type D-man, but I would like for him to develop as well in Lake Erie. Don't get me wrong I love the fact we got 4 kids just about ready to make the jump, but I don't want them to all make it together. I would be kind of nervous with 4 out of 6 D-man, being rookies and manning the point.

Trade out: Liles

He is going to have no place on this team... I don't even care what we get for him, a long shot prospect/AHL roster player/draft pick. What ever works. My dream would be using him to move up a couple places in the draft, but who are we trying to kid...

2010/2011 Roster:

Galiardi - Stastny - Stewart
Mueller - Duchene - Hejduk
Yip - O'Reilly - Jones
McLeod - Stoa - Hendricks
Konopka, Boogaard, Mercier

Quincey - Hannan
Elliot - Corvo
Cumiskey - Wilson
Shattenkirk, Cohen, Gaunce

Anderson
Budaj
Weiman

Stastny - C
Hejduk - A
McLeod - A

Duchene should be given a letter soon. I also hear O'Reilly is going to be a great leader. It was actually very difficult allocating the captaincies simply because there are so many gifted leaders on this roster.

Corvo is definitely the long shot. He could be substituted with Liles if he doesn't get moved, or one of the other 3 rookies. All I know is next year is going to be interesting.

What do you guys think? Who should we bring in, and get rid of?
