i actually want to go to an argo game and do some tailgating and catch the game but from where i live its an annoying trek public transit wise.

I've gone to a game at BMO but I didn't do the tailgating. You can't bring your own beer. Gotta buy theirs. (frank) that noise.

The actual game is definitely better at BMO than it was at the Dome.

not a pretty situation at all. i think many sens fans or young kids growing up in that area will eventually start becoming Leaf fans with all the excitement in Toronto these days.
- systemtool

or habs fans. or bruins fans. or vegas fans. anyone but the sens really. what an unfortunate situation.

Ryan Ellis, another Dman who had a fantastic playoff is out 4-6 months after having surgery.

The Leafs should inquire about the seats that the Sens must have for sale. The SBC could use some additional seating.

Let's get rid of Phaneuf.

No one wants him.

Let's rip some seats out then and cut down on two cleaners.

Soon it'll be "Ladies bring your own bog roll" night

I hesitate to make these points, as leaf fans will no doubt jump all over them and mock them ..............as they don't understand the differences between the largest hockey market in Canada and perhaps in the world, toronto, that has at least a third of the total population of Canada within a 60 to 70 minute drive of the ACC........ and Ottawa, which only has a population of 1.3 million, if you include Gatineau.

Ottawa does not have the corporate business base that all other NHL franchises have, ...... and with Ottawa's largest employer being the Federal government, it is not being allowed to buy tickets the same way private businesses that are the major employers in other Canadian cities do,for business purposes and allowing tax deductions.

The CTC is too big (capacity) for the market place ..

Ottawa is located between two 100 year old franchises that marketed to Ottawans prior to the Sens coming back to the NHL. A situation no other Canadian based NHL team has to deal with ........... and has impeded with growing their fan base to a degree

A couple of years ago, the Senators stopped handing out free tickets to "paper" the arena to give the appearance of higher paid attendance.

Of course the biggest reason, as far as I'm concerned, is the location of the Arena, and the because of it being poorly served by Public transit, most fans are forced to drive to games, and all that involves.

Once the new arena is built, and the Senators move to Lebreton flats....... all the public transportation, parking and location issues will be resolved.

now, mock away, because you don't understand the market place, and think they're all the same, like toronto's.

i think we can all agree on these points. does still mean they aren't in a good financial situation though even if the reasons why are all understandable.

Don't know about the team's financial situation ........... but NHL owners tend to cry poor, for a number of reasons ........... but with last years deep deep playoff run, the share of the Vegas expansion fee ............ I'm pretty sure EM made a profit last season.

Don't know if you're familiar with the LRT that is being built, and set to open in 2018 ....... but the new Arena is going to be located right on the line, between two stops, and speaking for myself would not hesitate to take it to the new location, but would never consider it for the current location.

I think all of your reasons are valid.

I also don't think anyone here believes the markets are the same or that the Leafs and the Sens face the same challenges as a franchise.

None of that changes the fact that this is just one more check in the Leafs column for who is in a better position. It speaks directly to the finances of the team. Even in a cap world, finances matter as the current Leafs regime has proven.

having to drive 30 minutes to the arena would stop only the most casual of fans from attending games. a move to a more favourable location would probably see little if any increase in attendance outside of years where the on-ice product is elite. long-term it will probably make no meaningful difference. it looks like the existing local habs, bruins, leafs fans etc are pretty loyal with no signs of converting. the population is large enough to sell out every game with ease if they were all sens fans. that's not the case. it's been what, 25 years? it is a bit surprising that they haven't won everyone over yet. makes you wonder how successful a 2nd toronto franchise would actually be since it could be argued that people in the gta are leafs fans first and hockey fans 2nd.

d0pps, you know how govt works.

the LRT system is going to have grossly inadequate capacity as the primary mode of transportation to move out the thousands of people that actually do attend sens games.

the 1st time a family of 4 gets home 3 hours after a game after freezing the asses off on the train platform in the middle of december will be the last game they attend.

really, just move the team to quebec.

It should help.

The concern I would have is that NOTHING makes a difference as much as a winning team.

Ottawa has been a playoff team, for a while now, but NOBODY considers them a contending team and EVERYBODY (including Sens fans) were shocked they went as far as they did last year. EVERYBODY also knows that they had a lot of breaks go their way to get there.

Are they going to improve? I don't think many people outside of Ottawa fans believe that. In the very near future there will be an issue signing Karlsson (although I suspect they get it done). The minor league team was horrible last year. Pinning future hopes on an american college center and a Dman from the Q does not sound promising.

Bottom line... Ottawa is not set up to be a perpetual contender and there is every possibility they start regressing. That may hurt attendance as much as a new arena helps it.

Besides... you listed a bunch of very valid reasons why Ottawa struggles with attendance (comparatively). Not many of those reasons go away with a new arena.
