This is, of course, the salient point, however Spatso missed it.

Always use Leaf summer talk to set up the season. Season starts, Leafs crap the bed and we get to watch the logical contortions of the same guys trying to explain outcomes.

Funny reading the current postings. You would not think that the Sens went to Conference finals and were the only team to give the Penguins a serious challenge throughs the playoffs. Ottawa is a team built to win.

We are only 6 weeks away from being able to talk scoreboard. However, I do encourage that you continue with the blue bluster and set up what might be the next great Leaf collapse.

#NHLTopPlayers: Top 20 Defensemen
NHL Network reveals best of current crop
NHL.com @NHL

1. Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators

Karlsson is a two-time Norris Trophy winner (2012, 2015) and finished second the past two seasons. He had 71 points (17 goals, 54 assists) last season. finishing second among defensemen to Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks (76). Karlsson had 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Senators come within one win of the Cup Final, doing so playing with two hairline fractures in his left heel. The 27-year-old has at least 66 points, 16 goals, 45 assists and 27 power-play points in each of the past four seasons. He finished fifth in the NHL last season in total ice time (2,066:29) and fourth in ice time per game (26:50).

"The most dynamic defenseman in the National Hockey League is Erik Karlsson," said NHL Network analyst Ken Daneyko, who played defenseman in the NHL from 1982-2003. "It was on display all season long, especially in the playoffs. … Everything runs through Erik Karlsson on the back end, and that's why he's No. 1 on our list."

NHL® 18 RATINGS - TOP 10 DEFENSEMEN

1. Erik Karlsson – 91 overall

Erik Karlsson earns the #1 spot as NHL® 18's best defenseman. While the Ottawa Senators captain isn't the most physical defender, everything else about Karlsson's game is world-class. He has 5-star Puck Skills, Shooting, Skating, Sense and Defense abilities that allow him to dominate the game and drive play and offense for any team. Karlsson is a game breaker on the back end and one of the best offensive defensemen to ever play in the NHL

Way too rich, the irony only gets better after some reflection.

The Leafs were a last place team. The Leafs are a last place team.

Matthews is not McDavid or Eichal or perhaps, even Laine or Puljujarvi. Yet Leaf fans have created this huge expectation around a kid that was not nearly the force of the Finns on the big stages of international hockey last year.

Not sure why the Leafs have delayed in signing him to a contract. Perhaps they think he is going to need some AHL development time. Nobody is hoping against Matthews, he should be a good player. But, there is absolutely nothing in his track record that suggests he will be an impact player in the NHL next year. Perhaps, there is a fatal flaw in the Leaf charism. If Matthews is put out head to head against veteran NHL centres every night and fans expect him to outperform all comers it is going to be a very long and disappointing winter for the blue and white.

I understand the importance of the summer season for Leaf fans. It is an opportunity to renew hope and create a bond with the team in the belief that next year will see the Leafs finally triumph. It is the Oiler model of a few years ago that had Yakupov (like Matthews, an older profile draft pick) dominating scoring in future NHL seasons or RNH being the slickest centre to come along in years.

Always keep in mind the notion that "we are different," is something that is really well understood. We know Matthews is not McDavid, not even close. We want to believe that he is better than Yakupov. Likely he is in the same range as RNH, but he will likely struggle to produce numbers as good as RNH got in his rookie year (18 goals, 34 assists in 64 games).

Well there was that one idiot who kept crowing about the Leafs signing Shattenkirk to an 8 year 65 million dollar deal which anyone who had the slightest clue about the NHL would know was impossible due to the CBA. And he went on to say that it was TSN who reported it and then he even tried to back that up with non TSN links which also didn't give those figures. I mean what a complete moron, right? And he didn't even have the balls to man up and admit his errors despite how laughably egregious they were. Anybody remember who that was? Stupid unrealistic Laffs fans.

If the Leafs sign Shattenkirk for 8 years and $65m. We will all wonder why they did not hang on to Phaneuf who is the better defensive/physical player. Leafs need defense, not more offensive presence.

Keep me posted for when the Leafs sign Markov age 38 for $6.5m. Or perhaps another over ager to pair with Hainsey.

From the Hockey News

1. Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators

He’s a two-time winner who also finished second the past two seasons and is just 27. He’s one of the greatest offensive blueliners of all-time. Only Karlsson, Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin and Paul Coffey have finished among the top 10 overall NHL scorers as defensemen twice. Karlsson, though, isn’t the defensive sieve he’s sometimes reputed to be. He finished second in the NHL in blocked shots last season, and he drives possession in Ottawa’s favor when he’s on the ice. Even if his off-season foot surgery costs him a couple games to start the season, he’s the safest bet to win the Norris and a virtual lock to be a finalist.
