Phaneuf had a magnificent playoff. Especially in the first round against the Bruins. Sens would not have succeeded without Phaneuf in their line up.

Leafs struggled against the Caps. They were especially weak on defence.

If Phaneuf had been in the Leaf line up they would have been able to compete harder against the Caps.

Sens had a hugely successful year. Regular season and playoffs went exceptionally well. Now, they are moving out some older players for the coming year and adding some highly talented rookies that had great years last year.

Leafs on the other hand are bringing in a group of guys that will be pushing age 40 by the end of their short term deals.

Sens have 4 top prospects on the TSN top 50 prospect list. Leafs have 0.

- spatso

yeah, Leafs just brought up the greatest rookie class in the history of the NHL.

Your top prospects are all unproven, and your team won nothing.

And you wonder why the rest of the NHL laughs at you guys.

Leafs go out and sign a bunch of old guys and everybody gets excited...happy days are here again. Sorry seen that sad dance before. It never ends well.

I am more than happy with the Sens moving out older players and adding prospects.

Sens have great depth in their system. Now is the time to start bringing some of the younger guys forward.

So, you think it is just a figment of my imagination that the Leafs signed a bunch of old guys including a Dman who all be 39 when he finishes his contract.

Yes, that one part.... Not the other parts of the post, just that one.

Everything else is the truth.

Its beyond (frank)ing bizarre that all of you Leafs fans used to defend Phaneuf with the exact same bs excuses Sens fans currently use and all you Sens fans used to attack Phaneuf with the exact same criticisms Leafs fans are currently using.

All of you idiots should seek help immediately. You all (frank)ing deserve each other.

Good luck this season!

first, I don't think Phaneuf is terrible. he's just not very good. he's never going to be the difference that makes a team much better.

now, I did defend Phaneuf back in the day. my defense of him was that he was depended on for an incredibly tough work load, and still managed average, not spectacular, results. I argues at tgat time that while not worth his salary, he's not overpaid by m9re than 2 million than what he brings to the table.. there was a time when he faced the toughest quality of competition in the league, with gunnarson as a partner.

but quite a bit has changed since then. he was 26, 27, 28 years old at the time. in his prime. scored at a 40 to 50 point pace while taking on those duties. along with being the number 1 PK dman for the Leafs. he was the Leafs undisputed number 1 dman. the last few years in toronto, he was falling down the depth chart. his even strength ice per game fell behind Gardiner first, then Rielly. he wasnt first pairing by the time he was dumped. Rielly was taking the tough minutes Phaneuf used to. look it up, it's damn true. and honestly, the most vocal of Leaf fans that defended Phaneuf, were rather silent before he was traded, not after, if that's what you're insinuating. his offensive output has dropped rather significantly from those seasons, and quite frankly, him and ceci are among the worst pylons in the league in their own zone. hes 32 years old now, not 26 and in his prime.

things change, and quite frankly, he deserved some criticism back then, but also some praise for what he had to handle in the first half of his stint in toronto. he doesn't have half the responsibility, is less effective at what his responsibilities are now, and even gets paid a bit more than back then.

he probably still takes more criticism than he should (due to contract, team, and general douchey demeanor), but let's be honest, there is a LOT more criticism deserved these days too.

It is possible for players to be less good as they age.

This would be like if the Leafs acquired Chara, and I said your criticisms of him aren't valid because you used to defend him.

A one year, a two year, and a three year that will probably be a two year. Those are the contracts to the older players. Can you please explain to me how these players or their contracts will have a negative impact on the team? Without just pulling up opinion tweets or written pieces from 'reporters'.

You sound excited about those old geezer contracts......it's certainly not the elite skill from the 19-20yr old rookies you're excited about, it's clearly the old guys. Spatso can tell

Yeah thats is a strange turn of events.. Did the Leafs already know this? they didnt seem concerned about it when asked..so maybe they did

Its just weird everyone talked about this cap and how you had to wait until the season started to use it (other GMs said the Leafs were in a tough spot). Or did someone just ask the NHL (Daly) and he just decided it was ok?

Yeah I have not been concerned about the Leafs Cap since 2014 when they hired someone who actually understands it.

I love the fact that the Leafs can even spot great undrafted players. Quite the eye for talent. Pospisil, Rueschhoff and Tortora looked excellent. Start them with the Solar Bears and let them work up from there.
