If you enjoy arguing with d0pps, may I recommend some other fine & carefully curated threads that span several other topics?

Things You Don't Understand V
this is a very fine thread where d0pps complains about liberals complaining about conservatives. it is the fifth edition of this riveting topic.

We'll see. Expect him to see action on Matthews line, unless you think Matthews isn't a first line centre. He scored 27 goals playing mostly on the third line of an offensively inept team last year.

Matthews is an Elite talent. The Leafs have never had somebody like him.

matthews carried a 4th liner in hyman the whole year.

he'll be a big upgrade on hyman; for a year, maybe 2. seems like the obvious fit in the lineup.

Very true. He's overpaid and he's old, but the guy can still shoot the puck. He'll be a decent fit.

I think production is only half the reason Marleau was brought in tbh. Leafs really lack quality vets the kids can look up to and respect as a leader.

Marleau contract is too much and should only be 2 years.
the 3rd year is a a problem imo, but the next 2 it doesnt matter, Marner and Mathews are still on ELC. they have the extra cap space with the LTIR for Horton and Lupus

Sounds like a Babcock move, he wanted him on the team.

Hainsey is a slight upgrade over Hunwick and Moore is a 4th line upgrade over Smith, since Boyle was not in the cards.

a bunch of ok moves, I think it makes the leafs a little better over the next 1-2 seasons

Exactly.

Both teams have alot of cap and youth. They paid a premium to bring in guys who can finish, lead by example. They got the exact type of player they wanted/needed.

of the 3300 players that have played since 1997, three have scored more goals than Patrick Marleau in that time.

Three.

I honestly can't see him playing that third season. Maybe I'll be wrong but this looks a lot like a two year/17 mil contract to me.

who knows.. probably LTIR

He is very much declining, he might be propped up with top line minutes and a strong PP in Toronto so you wont see it as much.

They easily could have gotten similar production for a fraction of that..but I guess they really really value leadership and stuff

If he does, I don't think it'll be with the Leafs.

San Jose will be in full rebuild mode by then. May send him back to play out his last season.

He needs 3.5 years to catch Gordie Howe for most games played.

Yeah pretty much exactly.

Cox seems to think the Leafs can't sign Matthews Marner and Nylander but it is nothing to do with Marleau. He just feels in a cap league you can't have 3 big salaries like that.

He might have a point but that would mean that the Leafs have too much good young talent.

.. I also think he is wrong on that point, but we'll see.

I honestly thought they needed a power play trigger man, and he should excel at that role with the kids. He probably won't offer what he could even a few years ago, but we all know that.

Marner-Matthews-Marleau
Nylander-Rielly.

Apparently not as good as toronto's ......... as they've just signed the last piece of their Cup winning plan, the steal of the UFA season!

The leafs are now "All In" and are making their Cup run beginning this coming season, with the acquisition of Marleau, who capitulates past a number of the best rookies in the entire history of the NHL, to become one of the three best forwards on the leafs .............. according to one your trollonto faithful here in this thread.

The leafs are in "Win Now Mode" and must win the Cup in the next two seasons (before they need to re-sign Matthews" as their window will be closed after that.

Your post is laughable. Let me guess, your hero is Spatso. If you really want humor, you should be talking about the Sens off season. You should talk about overpaid guys with your top paid player being 25 point, 13 goal piece of sh!t Bobby Ryan on your team. You get to have him for 5 more years at $7 million, and guess what he is a first ballot member of the Hall of Shame. He should be ashamed every time he picks up a paycheck. And that move where your dufas of a GM tried desperately to unload Phaneuf - how did that work out? And the cherry on top was longtime Sens Captain Alfie - giving the Sens the big adious. Now let's talk about Matheau - first ballot hall of famer, will score plenty with Matthews.

Have a nice day

Marleau signing signifies Leafs in win-now mode

For those who take a glass-half-empty view of the move, there’s this: Because Marleau is a player in the age 35-plus category, the website capfriendly.com states that the Leafs would get no cap relief in the event they opt to buy out Marleau, who will be 40 when the deal expires.

http://www.torontosun.com...ies-leafs-in-win-now-mode

Salary cap pushes Leafs into win-now mode:

Marleau, the third free agent 36 years of age or older to join the club on the weekend, was sought after by Lou Lamoriello because the Leafs GM understands that Nashville demonstrated just how close to winning many other teams are, and because he knows this window opened by Matthews, Nylander and Marner may shut much more quickly than most believe.

At this point I have no doubt all 3 get signed and things work out fine
