Lots of action on Condon...If this is Anderson's last year, the contract with Condon has something to do with facilitating the transition.

Chabot: My goal is to start the season in Ottawa
After an impressive season with the Saint John's Seadogs that saw him named the playoff MVP and defenceman of the year, and a World Juniors that saw him named defenceman of the tournament, Thomas Chabot has one goal coming into this season - to make the Ottawa Senators.

Ottawa did fine with Condon replacing Anderson for an extended period. I expect they want him to play a large number of games. A rested Anderson in the playoffs is formidable.

NHL requires you have strong back up. Ottawa will get lots of calls on Condon next year when some teams lose their starter. And, if Anderson goes down the team will be grateful to have Condon available.

Condon was .914 during his run last year. But it is a deceptive .914 as he was much stronger at the beginning and started to taper off as the season wore on. But, there is no doubt the team was comfortable playing in front of him.

He's a backup goalie that's been bounced around between 3 teams in 2 years, and was just signed to $2.4M for 3 years. When a team loses their starter, they promote their own backup, and typically use the backup role to give a goalie prospect a look. They don't go out and make calls about a guy that is overpaid and signed for two more years after this one is done. Because once they get their own starter back, they don't want to be stuck with a guy that is signed for, again, 3 years for $2.4M.

The turds have just found out full well what taking guys on that nobody wants, and are overpaid, means to a team. They exposed guys like Bobby Ryan and Clarke Macarthur, only to find an expansion team wouldn't even be interested, couldn't expose Phaneuf, and are now trying to find a way out of his contract.

And then they do this.

While it certainly is to a lesser extent that the 3 forwards mentioned, they just took on another bad contract that nobody wants. They just don't seem to learn.

The only defense I can think of, is, they pretty much had to retain a goalie that is capable of playing in the NHL. Because Anderson, while generally pretty good, rarely plays a full season, and is streaky to boot. They actually do need to KEEP this guy, because in a year's time there is a good chance they don't even have an NHL caliber goalie, even if Condon is barely that.

But I don't see why they signed him for more than 1 or 2 years. And he's not worth $2.4M a year either. More like $1M or $1.5M.

Maybe they preferred to send him West. The rumors I saw it was JVR or a 1st ..plus whatever

its hjalmarsson that bothers me, seemed like the perfect fit for the leafs

Easy to understand. McDavid signs for $13.4m on Canada day.

Almost certain that Draisaitl is looking for $8m over 8. He is an RFA and can be targeted next week.

John Tavares is getting $10m over 8.

The islanders did not want to take any significant salary back.

Leafs cannot give up picks because they are going to get hit in a similar salary push as the Oil and they are going to need to trade with the teams interested in taking warm bodies back.

Basically the Leafs and Islanders were not a commercial fit. Calgary offered a first and 2 seconds. Would have been bad move for Leafs to try and top that offer.

I'm sure it wouldn't make sense to you. Simple common sense things are hard for you to grasp. Let’s break this down:

Easy to understand.

Apparently not for you.

Wouldn’t have needed to. If Liljegren doesn’t fall on our lap, we trade the 2017 1st, and 2 2018 2nds to the Isles. The instant gratification of a 2017 1st makes it a better offer over than a collection of 2018, 2019 and 2020 picks they got.

Bottom line, Lou was patient and it paid off picking up a top prospect.

I'm on the fence. The entire point of stockpiling picks and prospects like the Leafs have, is to use them to bolster your team, when you're ready to compete. Is now the best time to do so? Maybe. one or two players in the right spots and this Leafs team could be a legit contender.

Or maybe wait one more year.

If MCDavid gets $13.4m, Draisaitl gets $8.0 to $8.5m.

I wonder if this has the Oilers having to look at moving salary?

This would be a lot bigger number than Toewes and Kane. Not sure it works for a team still looking to plug some lineup needs.
