It is just Dopps and I against the ugly herd. This is our Thermopylae. We have done fine. You might have 7000 soldiers, we have right on our side.

Not only do you not know hockey, you're sorely ill informed about history.

Perhaps you did not hear the frustrated Ranger commentary on his play.

When it mattered he was a no show!

I still love you. Your one of the few who actually makes some sense at a hockey level. Don't ignore the fact our boy Laine has the same number of goals as Matthews.

I suspect all that means is the fan base gets ahead of the development curve and presses prematurely for better team results.

Other than for the screw up on Laine the Leafs are making great moves. But, it is not helpful when the Hockey News and other Toronto based voices insist the Leafs are playoff ready.it takes time before it gets better.

Do you already forget. My issue was not against Matthews. I still think he is a good pick. My issue was that nobody was prepared to discuss the draft. There is nothing worse than a closed mind. Both the fans and, more important, Leaf management refused to consider a change to Laine. He was spectacular at the World Juniors, in the Finnish playoffs and at the World Championships.

Somebody may have screwed up. It is unfortunate.

Every year we debate the draft. It is a fun time. Tyler or Taylor, as strange as it sounds now we even speculated that Eichle might be better than McDavid. It was good fun and everyone gets to better understand all the prospects.

I thought Matthews was the tight pick for the Leafs because he was a center. But as Laine started taking over the stage, especially the World Championships, I was certain that he should be ar least considered. I thought it was strange when all the Leaf fans and media piled on and said it was non negotiable, not even up for discussion.

Now, I think, maybe everybody has messed up. Laine is the best pure scorer to come into the league since Stamkos, he might even be better. It is sad we never got a chance to debate it before the draft.

Seriously, does anybody else out there wonder if the Leafs made the right pick?

If two players are equal always take the bigger guy, if they are the same size take the centre, if their both centres take the younger of the two. In this case Laine is not a centre so you would think the Leafs should be on pretty safe ground in defending their pick.

But, Laine has scored some fabulous goals....he scored again last night.

Look I know you guys are disappointed. But, no need to take it out on us.

Many people forget that Dangle scored 25 goals in his rookie season. Perhaps Matthews will be able to recapture that first game moment.

On the other hand, maybe Laine may not be able to maintain his league leading pace.

Perhaps hockey has never seen such a great and triumphal celebration. It is actually good for hockey. Finally, Leaf fans having something to cheer. We get to watch them revelling in their hard won victory of a last place finish. There is no doubt Leaf fans have convincingly won the summer. But, soon enough, the boys will return to the ice and once again the scoreboard will matter.

Look, it is pretty straight forward. The Leafs are the last place team in the league and they are about to discover how little impact a group of 18 and 19 year old players have once the hard pace of the NHL kicks in. This is the normal summer buzz of the blue and white. It is completely gone by Christmas and we will see the same pattern next summer.

Much of the bravado is intended to mask the loser results of the past years. But the scoreboard does not lie. The Leafs had the worst record in the NHL. As they stand right now, they are actually a lot less competitive than what they were at this time last year. So get ready for the same result next year.

Also get ready for a whole bunch more postings on how bad the Sens are. Shame is a toxic emotion. It seeks darkness and the edges of our feelings. It becomes infused with our identity. Most Leaf fans feel trapped by an overwhelming identity with the stain of shame. Shame in this case is not how you feel as a Leaf fan, it is what you are. People begin to think that losing is not just what we do, it is the foundation of our being.

It is important to properly read the signals when you see Leaf fans reverting to anger, threatening tactics, name calling and personal insults. The responses are essentially self protective. These fans believe they have been beaten around so badly, especially over the last few years. They have been ridiculed, trivialized and dismissed. They have been excluded from the competitive hockey debate. So, they make irrational hockey claims. They come to despise anyone who forces them to face reality.

This summer is about a grand illusion. Matthews, they tell themselves, can do better than Tavares, Stamkos or Eichel or, dare we even say, McDavid. He will instantly pull the Leafs into the playoff mix in his first year and "we will matter again."

When the reality of the situation finally settles into the thinking of Leaf fans they will revert to lashing out against others. They are unconsciously trying to inflict the humiliation they feel unto to others. They want others to know the pain that they are living every day. Leaf fans, for example, do not hate Karlsson. They just intuitively know that he causes them so much pain. It has everything to do with how much Senator fans love Karlsson. They adore his skill his speed and the fact that he is so unique and special. He laughs, he smiles and delights. He is so much like Alphie and entirely fused into our hearts. Leaf fans just want a player who is special for them, someone to love, somebody that they know they can believe in.

One last thought. Shame is always held together by a deeply held wound. You can only escape the wound by naming it, by defining and by choosing not to let it define you from the secret recesses of your own mind. I stopped feeling ashamed when I finally stopped drinking the blue and white kool aid and called out and named the pain. When I publicly let go of the Leafs, when I chose to no longer carry the burden of their failure, I became free. So, I understand their bitterness, their invective and mostly their hurt. I understand how badly they have suffered. I try not to add to that suffering by responding in kind when they become so disrespectful of others.

What I like about this post is how he's now pining his hopes of the Sens not regressing on a bunch of rookies several tiers below what the Leafs brought in.

The rumoured "deals" I've seen that Ottawa was offered, to keep Methot, were way to high of an asking price to pay.

I've read that LV would select Claesson (instead of Methot), and would also receive the Sens 2017 1st round pick and Filip Chlapik

The other deal was to select Borowiecki (instead of Methot), and would get the 47th pick overall and Colin White

The funniest past of him telling us how little impact a bunch of kids will have is where he is convinced this year that Harpur, White and Chabot will make the Sens go further than last year...

As if those 3 are even playing the same (frank)ing sport as Matthews Marner and Nylander.

Led by several leafs rookies, the 2016-17 nhl rookie class was bigly. Particularly Matthews.

The 2017-18 nhl rookie class led by several sens rookies is going to be a hot mess. Particularly Shabow.

Just to be clear, my issue is not against chabow. I still think he is a good pick. My issue is that nobody is prepared to discuss the rookie of the year for 17-18. There is nothing worse than a closed mind. Both the sens fans and, more important, Sens management refuse to consider that they are over rating shabot and that Kapanen might finish ahead of him in rookie of the year voting.

Somebody in sens management may have screwed up. It is unfortunate.

He's been a "good fit" with Karlsson for five seasons ................. did playing with an Elite D-man make Methot look better than he is ............ remember he was 3rd pairing in Columbus.

He's gone, Sens can't do anything about it now, no use in crying over spilled milk .......... but $4.9 Million off the Sal.Cap.
