I woudn't be so sure they select Methot. Vegas may choose Claesson instead?
- Aetherial

someone just has to offer them something that Vegas deems better than claesson. a mid first probably does the trick quite easily.

Don't know. Methot is same age as Phaneuf (2 months difference).

Claesson is a lot younger.

Serious. Claesson? A 24 year old useless dman.

I'll eat my hat if vegas takes that piece of sh!t

Comments going around that Methot is a good player but he is far less of a player than people think when he is not paired with Karlsson. I thought the Sens should keep Methot and put Dzingle and other forwards on the non protected list (4+4+1).

We are hearing that Dorion is not even trying to negotiate any deal to keep Methot and encouraging LV to make their choice from who is available.

Curios.

I think some of you guys are a bit delusional in terms of the role that Methot plays with the Sens. He gets almost all his ice time playing beside the best defenseman in the world. His greatest quality is that he reads Karlsson well and has shaped his game around being fully responsive to Karlsson's moves. It is ludicrous to think that if he goes to another team you are going to see the same kind of success that he has had in Ottawa.

So why has Ottawa put Methot on the move list and why have they not tried to get a deal done to protect Methot? Occam taught the right answer is usually the obvious one.

"For each accepted explanation of a phenomenon, there may be an extremely large, perhaps even incomprehensible, number of possible and more complex alternatives, because one can always burden failing explanations with ad hoc hypotheses to prevent them from being falsified; therefore, simpler theories are preferable to more complex ones because they are more testable."

So, what is the obvious?
Did Ottawa simply screw up and think they could slip Methot through and not be noticed?
Why did they make such a fuss over asking Phaneuf to waive thereby drawing attention to their limited options?
Why have they not tried to do a deal with LV to hang on to Methot?
Why do they keep stressing they want to start the season with the same top 4 D as they ended the season?

Ottawa has only 2 right handed shooters on D, Karlsson and Ceci.

The Sens are well stocked with left handed shooters including Phaneuf, Methot, Claesson, Wideman and Borowiecki.

They will add two more left shooters in Harpur and Chabot in the new season. Both Englund and Jaros are close to being NHL ready.

Karlsson logs huge minutes. Ceci also plays big minutes and coming down the stretch this past year there were multiple games where he played more minutes than the Precious One.

Not sure how you configure the Sens D if Methot is removed from formula. But, I think that is clearly the direction it is headed.

Minutes played and number of shifts are pretty good measures how a coach and team values a player. So, if you look at the Avg TOI and # of Shifts for each Sens Dman through the playoffs it gives you a pretty good breakdown of what is happening and what will be happening in the future

Player(GP) TOI/Game Shifts/Game

Karl (19) 28:07 32.4
Ceci (19) 23:36 32.5
Phan (19) 23:18 33.5
Meth (18) 22:13 31.4
Harp (9) 18:28 27.1
Clae (14) 14:49 22.8
Wide (15) 13:00 21.3
Boro (2) 10:24 15.5

So, it looks like Harpur may be playing top 4 next year. He had a great year in the AHL. They love his game. But, is he ready for top 4? He is a very good skater and puck handler. He has great size. But, he does not play a big physical game.

Perhaps they choose to put Phaneuf up with Karllson, they play really well together. Harpur with Ceci?

So you don't think he'd be as good elsewhere, the sens didn't protect him and didn't apparently make side deal to keep him safe.. But you question the comment of lack of depth?

Think about it. Most teams don't have 4 top Dmen like the Sens do. The reason why they are putting a player out with the quality of Methot is because they do in fact have substantial depth. Other teams with good defensive depth like Anaheim and Minnesota that go 4 deep are having the same issue.

Nashville which may have the best back end 4 man depth was able to avoid the expansion draft challenge by going 4-4-1 on their protection list.

I dont see a fit with Methot on the Leafs, he is old and average now and not a RH shot.
