Has this thread been reduced to Leafs vs Sens, who has the greater population?

I'm pretty sure we could have saved 700 pages and countless time. ( could have been used on the pizza/beer/wings machine )

- golfingsince

I'm certain Dopps would still have an argument in the Sens' favour if this was the case.

a) it does.
b) firing the puck at the net is almost never a bad idea - if your team maintains possession, then who the (frank) cares that a guy took a shot? Coaches preach this, and it's corsi favourable, because that line kept possession, WHICH IS WHAT THE (frank)ING STAT TRACKS. And again, if every game this hypothetical guy is taking blatantly dumb shots, the coach will have something to say about that.
c)If the guy is taking dumb shots that consistently result in turn-overs, and cost his team in terms of possession, then it's going to come back to haunt him.

No it really doesn't. It wasn't a coherent post.

a 40+ minute drive to get to a game and $20 parking doesn't stop toronto from filling seats. why? because there are a ton of leafs fans.

fake excuses.

- daeth

No, from my part of town, for a weeknight game, it's much closer to an hour drive, and after the game, exiting the parking lot sometimes takes 1/2 an hour.......... so the location is not ideal, and the idiot who designed the parking-lots on the site should never work again.

Senators have never gone up two games to none, when starting a series at home .......... that changes today, with a 6-5 OT win for the Sens, with both goaltenders a little off their game.

$20 during regular season ......... jacked up to $30 for the playoffs.

Top 10 reasons for soft attendance, as suggested by fans and members of the community:

1. Price point: Ottawa has always been a price-sensitive market. Ticket prices jump for Round 1 playoff tickets and jump again for Round 2. Those $25-$30 cheap seats in the regular season become $100. Lower-level seats are about $300, rich by local standards even if most other NHL clubs charge more.

2. Small season-ticket base: If the Senators could sell 12,000-14,000 season tickets, it would be a walk in the park to coax a sellout from game to game. In fact, there would be a scarcity driving up demand. But with a ticket base under 10,000, it places enormous pressure on the ticket office to sell 41 home dates, plus playoff dates. Fans always know there are tickets available, which further softens demand.

3. Add-ons: Nothing drives a fan crazier than excessive parking prices at a suburban, automobile-centric arena. The No. 4 lot across from the rink was $20 all season. Now it’s $30. Many fans consider this gouging. It makes them peeved enough to stay home. Reducing parking prices for the balance of the playoffs would go a long way.

4. Ottawa-Gatineau is a government bytown: Unlike Toronto, Montreal or even Calgary, Ottawa doesn’t have the corporate base to pick up the slack. Corporations snap up seats at the ACC in Toronto. The Maple Leafs don’t have to rely on their stampeding fans, who stampede anyway.

5. Phoenix pay system: For those in the private sector, this seems a vague factor. For public servants, it’s real. More than 80,000 government workers were initially affected by pay system snafus. The problems linger. There is no disposable income for people who can’t rely on getting paid regularly.

6. Home comforts: For many, the greatest seat in the house is in front of their own TV, possibly a wide-screen, 4K. One fan writes about his view from a $250 seat for a game in the Bruins series — “the view of the action at the far end was awful. The netting around the rink takes away from watching the video screen.” He watched Thursday night’s game on his 4K TV.

7. Slow-building resentment: Fans have grumbled for years about an ownership delivering mostly unsuccessful hockey, on a budget. In an unpopular move, Eugene Melnyk cut ties with several longtime managers this season, including president and co-founder Cyril Leeder. The team is suddenly winning big games. But there is often a lag between success and ticket sales.

8. Francophone factor: Many French-speaking members of the Ottawa-Gatineau region complain that the Senators don’t do enough to engage franco fans. (The CFL Redblacks have made a huge effort in this area.) One email writer complains that the club’s Facebook and Twitter sites are 100 per cent in English.

9. Location, location: An oldy, but still a factor. If the Senators were downtown (where they will be in several years), there would be a synergy with downtown restaurants and bars, tourists could walk over to the rink from their hotel. Instead, fans have to endure Queensway traffic, parking hassles and a lack of transit options. Note that the “Sens Mile” is not on Palladium Drive in Kanata.

10. Bar scene: May is approaching. The weather is finally breaking (more or less). Outdoor cafés beckon. Fans who have been cooped up all winter are busting to enjoy an evening out. Attending playoff games live is a “once in a while” thing. Fans still believe, but aren’t “All In” the arena.

Man, it sounds like Sens fans just don't care that much about their team.

Can't say I blame them.

I was a season ticket holder when I lived out west.

Going to games all the time becomes tedious. I'd often rather just watch the game at home, friend's house or at a pub.

No, at that point you don't want to watch them whatsoever.

It really is an overrated experience. My biggest regret is not selling more tickets when I had the chance.

It's so much easier just to agree that there just aren't enough fans to guarantee sellouts lol. Instead we get defensive fans and excuses. It's not sens fans fault that there aren't more of them.

But under 8% of the Ottawa metropolitan area's population may be unsure of what's happening with their paycheques!

And parking got hiked up to $30!

And tickets cost more than free!

And bars are open!

No other city has ever seen such problems!

Ottawa has a local tv agreement of $40m annually. It is one of the better tv contracts in the league. Their merchandise and related revenues are good. Sens want to charge double and triple the seat price for the same ticket from the regular season. The playoffs are very pricey for the regular fan.

Nobody needs to apologize for having been priced out of the market.

It will level off during the next round.

40% of employed people, work for the Public Service ....... not 8%.......... ......... unless you expect kindergarten aged season ticket holders.

- D0PPELGANGER

Of the over 1,000,000 people you were boasting live in and around Ottawa, only 200k are employed?

Is unemployment a big issue over there?

Yet the average wage in Ottawa is among the highest in the country (only below Calgary in terms of by major city), and the average house price is less than half what it is in Toronto... so don't give me that "we don't have enough money" bullpoop. Just call a spade a spade and say that the support for the team is underwhelming at best.
