You realize this is panic from Melnickel, over the prospect of losing a few playoff home dates, and their revenue (with no player salaries) right?

You may think it's panic, but it's just all part of the logical plan that was laid out last week, in the media, when they signed him to an ATO, and said they would watch him play a number of games at the AHL level, before deciding if he'd be able to help the NHL team.

By your logic, I guess burning one year off of Chabot's ELC was also a panic move, right?

Management continued to negotiate his ELC over the past week, and decided this was the time to turn him pro.

Whether or not he plays, is up to the coach .............. but with the number of injuries on the roster, I can see him getting into a game vs the Red Wings either today, or tomorrow.

Now if you ask me if I think they should have turned him pro (at the NHL level), with the state of the team as it is now, as a result of injuries ...... I don't see him making any difference one way or another, now.

If the Sens go into the playoffs with Phaneauf and Wideman as their top pairing D men, they are not going very deep, no matter who they faced in the first round.

The Lightning are three points behind the leafs, and play the leafs this week.

So the leafs should roll over and let them win, so the Lightning can catch the Senators ............. right?

I don't think the Leafs care too much about teams behind them, like the Sens. With the amount they've been winning lately, they're only looking up the standings.

So should the leafs be more worried about the Lightning, than the Senators?

Tampa has a better chance of catching the leafs, than they do the Sens, as the Sens don't play them anymore, but they play the leafs ........ in the proverbial "four point game".

Montréal Canadiens .635 (clinched)

Ottawa Senators .591
leafs .591
Boston Bruins .582
Tampa Bay Lightning .564

You're right, there is an extremely slim chance, 0.2%, and the Sens have a slightly better slim chance 0.4% .............. but it's not going to happen.

Congratulations Montreal

Hope it ends up Sens/Leafs for 2/3 in the division. Really want that matchup

I do remember posting a few months ago that based on the underlying numbers at the time.. it would be Montreal, Boston and Toronto at the top

Boston at the time was good but not getting the results.. the Sens have been very average and were too high

No doubt that losing their top three D-Men, playing in a defense first system, has downgraded their playoff fortunes.

They should still be able to make the Playoffs (Magic Number = 5 to eliminate Tampa) but getting past the first round looks undoable.

sens have junk roster, can't win unless healthy.

gotta expect that injuries will happen, need to win despite them. bolts aren't making excuses.

If Tampa runs the table, Ottawa will need 6, as at 4-0 vs 2-2-1, Tampa will have the ROW tie breaker.

But if Ottawa can muster a .500 record the rest of the way... and that is an if... They should be able to squeak into the playoffs.

Yea, pretty safe to say that if Tampa was healthy this season, Ottawa would be on the outside looking in.

Tampa is not in a position to eliminate either Ottawa or toronto, on their own, they would need help.

Any combination of Sens wins and Tamps losses, equaling 5 points (won or lost) will eliminate Tampa from supplanting the Senators.

The same thing applies for toronto vs Tampa (5 points).

The "magic" number to either toronto or Ottawa to eliminate their Ontario rival from the playoffs is 10 ......... so it's much more likely that Tampa ends up being the odd man out.

The leafs were lucky to not sustain key injuries this year. they need to add some depth a defense in the offseason to be able to withstand injuries. But they have plenty of depth a F.

With the sens icing a roster of broken down junk, the sens were actually lucky to be as healthy as they were all year.

Ottawa was on the downswing before Karlsson, Ceci, or Methot got injured, and the advanced stats showed they were due for a regression all year.

This has less to do with Ottawa's injuries, and more to do with their piss-poor offense, and the system they play that makes it look even worse. They rode great goaltending this season, and they're nothing without it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking at a bottom-10 finish next season.

Tampa Bay is not in the position to supplant either toronto or Ottawa, without "help".

I'm going by the numbers shown on this website, so explain what it is, that you say I'm missing.

The fact is, that Ottawa, never iced a line up this season with everyone healthy and or available ...........they were always missing someone, that is healthy, would have been in the lineup.

I could list the number of players that were either injured, or not available, but I think you know this to be a fact.

If Ottawa had NOT made the deals that brought in a few players at or before the TDL, they'd be icing a team with half of the players called up from the AHL, for the past 10 games.

Again, if Tampa runs the table, and Ottawa pulls off a 5 point run, both teams will be tied for points, but Tampa will likely have the ROW tie breaker, and thus bump Ottawa.

In order for Ottawa to ensure beyond any possibility that Tampa doesn't pass them, they'll need to get 6 points.
