Overall the Leafs have had a good season. Stumbling at this point is not surprising. It is well understood that everyone steps up their game after the half way point and the Leafs are a very young team. I thought the collapse would happen in December. But give them credit they stayed in the mix for a extra couple of months.

But didn't they just trade for Boyle, to help guide them into the playoffs?

Boyle is a good signing. Problem is 3rd and 4th line players need to play a different game. Most of the Leafs young guys have always played 1st or 2nd line minutes in their young careers. Someone needs to help some of them understand the different expectations for a 3rd line player.

But it looks like Boyle is going to only be around for about 20 games, as the leafs would really have to "up" their game, in many areas, just the squeak into the playoffs.

Boyle is an UFA, and will most likely return to Tampa, and join Byron Froese and whomever the second-round draft pick is (that toronto traded for him) on July 1st.

I doubt Boyle is going to sign in Tampa to play on their AHL team.

I know you have it in your head that Froese was the Leafs' top prospect, even though I don't think any Leafs fan even saw him as a prospect at all. It may be because he's more impressive than your own prospects, but I assure you, if he was considered a prospect by us, he would have been somewhere in the 20s on our list.

As for Boyle, he's brought in as a veteran presence for the team, to show them what it takes at this time of year. Whether the Leafs make it or not, he still has a lot to teach them. Giving up a 2nd and getting Tampa to take the extra contract is a bit of a steep price to pay if they don't make it to the playoffs, but it's not anywhere near as bad as trading one of your top youngsters along with a 2nd round pick for a 29 year old 3rd liner like Brassard.

And to his credit, Boyle seems excited to play for Babcock specifically. Might wind up re-signing with a team on the upswing.

So don't worry too much about your vastly superior rival. We're fine.

The guy was leading your farm team in scoring. Might not be your top prospect but he was certainly playing better than any of them......and you traded him and a 2nd Rd pick for 2 months of a 4th liner who in no way makes you a better team.

Great asset management

A career AHLer and a mid 2nd rounder at best would have made them better? I love hacking in the Leafs but they got the only remotely meaningful piece in the deal, so whether it's for a few months or not, they win.

Serious overanalysis on a meaningless trade in any case.

Laine is crushing Matthews in Pierre Lebrun's hot poll for Calder trophy nomination. Leaf fans need to step up and support their player.

Damien Cox has claimed that the backlash against a supposed Toronto media bias in favour of Matthews is not fair.

I really think the debate should come down to the player who has the best season. Two great young players.

The scuttlebutt I've heard, is that he'd not be too enamoured with the higher taxes in Ontario, vs the extremely lower taxes in Florida ........ and his wife is from Tampa, so he would be predisposed to a return ........... But who is know for sure ..... he'll be 33 years old this year, and perhaps is looking for a longer term contract, as it may be his last one

Yeah I did, and then clarified that he was their AHL teams top scorer ........ I don't know much about the prospects in leafs system, as I don't follow them, and could care less .......... just as some leaf fans don't think there are some good prospects in the Ottawa system, because either they don't follow them ............ or don't notice when an Ottawa prospect was voted the MVP of the World Junior Championship, named the top defenceman and also made the All Star team.

Vote is closed. 46,000 voted in Pierre LeBrun poll on best rookie. He was surprised that Laine decisively polled 56% support to 42% for Matthews.

Lebrun expected the vote to be a 50/50 horse race involving the two rookies.

Now that the stark reality of the leafs dismal play since the beginning of the year is setting in ........ and their plummeting chances of making the playoffs get worse each and everyday, leaf fans are now just lashing out in true troll form at the Senators, and their fans.

those true colours come shining through once again.

Neither fanbase, at the beginning of the season had much who that either Ontario team had a chance at challenging for the playoffs this season, based on last years play.

Ottawa brought in a new coaching staff and system, and have slowly and steadily moved away from their disjointed play of last season, and now have moved into a strong position to make the playoffs ....... and depending on where the finish at the end of the season, look to go at least beyond the first round.

The leafs just have over achieved for the first half of the season, and are now struggling to win games, now that the intensity of play has been dialed up...........nothing to be ashamed of, they will still exceed most leaf fans expectations, and if they don't make the playoffs, they can get all geeked up for the draft lottery.
