No one will take him. The Sens are stuck with him and Phaneuf long term, unless they're willing to cough up a boat load of draft picks, and retain a tonne of salary, to dump them. We know the Sens are not willing to do either.

When I heard that Ryan was scratched Saturday night, my first thought was that the Sens were about to trade him. I was disappointed when he dressed Sunday night. I like the person that Bobby Ryan is but it was a mistake to trade for him and a far greater mistake to resign him to a long term deal. He is not a good enough skater. You can be a weak technical skater when your young. But as you get older the poor skating does you in almost all the time. There are a few exceptions (Brett Hull, and maybe Cory Perry, but even Perry has had extended bad moments this year.)

If Ryan retires, he doesn't get paid, so that's not going to happen. If he gets sent down, it becomes even less likely that he can be traded, and Ottawa is now paying him not to play... which isn't in the wheelhouse of a budget team like the Sens.

In all likelihood, if he gets traded, it's to a team with lots of money, that can send over a bunch of bigger cap hits worth less overall dollars - but there aren't many opportunities like that available... or Ottawa gives up some high picks or prospects to a team with money and cap space. Unfortunately for Ottawa, they don't have much outside of picks to offer, and they need to keep those picks to help their bare cupboards.

I think we see Ryan staying a Sen, at the expense of RFAs looking for raises being sent elsewhere.

- Feeling Glucky?

This whole idea that caps hit don't matter for certain teams is garbage. regardless of whether a particular team won't max out cap hits or salary, a player with high cap hits or salary is still less marketable to other teams.

if booby Ryan had a 1 mil cap hit, and Ottawa wanted to get rid of him, they could probably trade him to a contender, and get a nice pick or two back. but now they'd have to give some up to get rid of him.

look at the Leafs, when they finally started to do things right they had to clear the junk as step one. that took work and taking on other short term junk. the sens would have to shuffle and take on crap if theyou wanted to clear out phaneuf and Ryan.

a players value as an asset or liability in this case always has implications. always.

It is wonderful that we have hockey back in a meaningful way. This Saturday will involve a game between the Leafs and Sens that actually has some real meaning. It does not matter who you cheer for it is great for hockey that the matchup has some meaning.

I work this coming Saturday but should get home for the puck drop! It is all about scoreboard.

I think those are valid points. And, they certainly reflected my opinion before the draft. The writer (Lawless) also agrees with the point and does not diss Matthews in any way other than his stressing Matthews as a 4 star player and Laine likely a 5 star.

So true. Leafs have had a great summer of blue and whites summer talk and now that the players are on the ice they disappear, Nothing changes.

Here we go again....it is preseason and results are not very important but they are finally on the ice and scoreboard once again begins to count as the primary measure of performance. Don't look now but the beginning of December is only 8 weeks away.

i see the Leaf fans are still having a little blue and white hype before the games start for real. It is going to be a long season. Enjoy your pregame chatter.

I don't see the Leafs being any stronger than the Oilers of 5 years ago. Do they have anyone as good as Taylor Hall? Don't think so. How many years did it take the Islanders to make the playoffs after drafting Tavares?

Don't think it serves any purpose to raise expectations based on the performance of a group of young players that have not yet played a full NHL season.

We don't know if Marner is the next Patrick Kane. Perhaps he is Sam Gagner, another of those sure fire first round Oiler picks of the past. I like how Shanahan is managing the rebuild. I don't like the way expectations are being raised by some fans and media when there is absolutely no reason to believe the Leafs will be any stronger than what they were last year.

We are moving into stage II of a typical blue koolaid summer. Fans are beginning to notice the stories being floated that Marner might not be fit enough or ready for NHL prime time. Leafs are a last place team, they are sort of like a very young Edmonton crew of last year without McDavid.

But Leaf fans are great hockey fans and now that the silly summer chatter is winding down, they are getting around to a more balanced level of hockey discussion. We will see the Stage III early season euphoria when they win a few games at the beginning of the season and the Toronto based media predicts good things for them. But the Stage III crash into despair will come like clockwork in early December. Stage IV acceptance of reality will include some anger and frustration but it is not long lasting. And, come early March, Stage I starts again with a high degree of hopefulness as speculation of the guaranteed Tavares signing gets ramped up and fans discuss the great potential of the impending lottery and draft.
