The Thornton trade led to the drafting of Kessel as well as the signings of Chara and Savard.
- Cape Breton Bruins

yep, like I said, nothing happens in isolation.

This is what Chara said about Ottawa and the move to Boston:

"I wanted to stay here," Chara told the Sun. "I'm very disappointed. I thought Ottawa would be really aggressive and they would really show it. In the last nine days before July 1st, we never received a phone call. Myself and (agent) Matt (Keator) were just sitting there and making all the calls. We told them, 'Let's talk and let's negotiate.' They said:' 'Six million, you sign it or we're going to go the other way.' They did. They chose Wade (Redden). That's great. He's an unbelievable player and a great guy. He's a good leader and they made the right decision. They are saying that Wade took less to stay in Ottawa, but we both got offered $6 million and he didn't take less because he took $6.5 million."
- StraightFromCharasMouth

It would really suck to be that team that "went the other way". Fortunately, for Boston, they didn't go the other way. Would you agree?

Could you imagine if the Sens had Chara in the finals against the Ducks? Someone to answer Pronger who basically rag dolled the whole Sens team for five games.

Speaking of things "going the other way", I agree, that may have changed things.

I love how Chara says "they made the right decision". I love it. I'm sure he feels that way.

While we're on the topic of things that go the other way, what do you think of Spatso?

Well come on. It's absurd. Sens fans sitting there chirping that it was all about Seguin (who was playing 13th forward for them at the time) when Chara was patrolling their blueline. They wouldn't pay him $6.5M? Okay. Time to move on.

It fits with the Sens way of doing things though. Melnyk has chirped about players being required to "take the Stanley cup discount" to play in Ottawa before.

Yup, didn't mean to ignore that Tim Thomas.

but damn, you must love that Chara signing. Got him for free. didn't even have to send any assets to some other team to get him. It would suck to be the team that let him walk him for nothing.

- prock

Well the team that let him walk was able to hold on to Redden, so it was all good.

It's funny, I get accused of making things up, that Chara wanted to leave and made unrealistic demands, that he knew the Sens wouldn't do, like being captain.

I see absoultely no source backing that up, at all. It in fact, contradicts what Chara has said.

I think SOMEONE here might be making something up.......

I'm just gonna file "Chara made unrealistic demands and wanted to leave" with "Global warming is a hoax".

Yes, that's what I said, they chose Redden over Chara, and he walked for nothing. That's gotta suck. No? You don't think so?
- prock

I know so.
They did not pick one over the other.
They offered both players the same contract ........... Chara want more, and asked for what they could not give him.

It's well known in Ottawa that Chara wanted to be the Captain, something they were not going to give him...... and he knew it.

And we all know the "spin" a player gives the media is always the truth.

Well he says they offered him $6.0M, and wouldn't go any higher. He says Chara and his agent did all the calling. He says 9 days passed and the Sens never called him once.

Given that they gave Redden more, seems to me like they could have offered more. taht pretty blatantly seems like choosing Redden over Chara.

You told me he WANTED to leave. You told me he demanded the captaincy. Can you provide a source contradicting what Chara says that Chara asked for?

Gauranteed, no source. This is like that global warming hoax. the Sens payroll in 05/06 was $37, and the salary cap went up to $44M in 06.07. Redden got a $4M raise, Gerber got almost $4M as a free agent. Corvo for $3M.

It wouldn't have required much movement to offer Chara more than $6M.

Yup, he sucked. Him and Redden eventually ended up in the same place, the AHL. but, at the very least, it was never a choice between signing Jeff Finger, and retaining a Hall of Fame Dman.

(to find that kind of thing from the Leafs, you have to go back a little further, to the Kurvers for Niedermayer trade)
