You seem like you're feeling pretty angry

What beliefs led you to be angry and what experiences shaped those beliefs?

- ReporterChris

Anger is actually best understood as a secondary emotion. So, although experiences can influence an anger pattern, the actual experiences are not the direct cause of anger. Anger comes out of a wound, a psychological hurt. Anger is an entirely healthy emotion when expressed in an appropriate manner. Anger is unhealthy when it is repressed or inappropriately expressed. Think of anger as a reaction to an event. If your reaction to an immediate event is anger and the anger is proportionate to the event it is probably healthy. If on the other hand, if your anger is disproportionate (larger or smaller) than the actual event that triggered the anger response you know that the anger is being driven by past events and a primary emotion likely conditioned by a wound.

Suggesting that someone is angry is no different than saying they are happy or sad. It is just a silly distinction without meaning. I have been angry about lots of things and have no difficulty allowing people know that I am angry. I can assure you that there is nothing about hockey that has caused me to be hurt (or wounded) and the source of anger in my life.

I forgot to take into consideration that Phaneuf's career has been trending upwards in the last few years.

Agreed. A consistent decline in goals per game is usually a good sign of an upward trend.

Oh. I get it.

You were seriously comparing Phaneuf to a hall of famer.

No I was recalling how he was booed out of Toronto. Toronto media said he was finished as a player.

"In 1995, after being named to the second-team All-Stars Murphy was traded to his hometown Leafs from the Penguins for Dmitri Mironov and a second round pick. Leafs fans booed Murphy, the highest paid player on the Leafs, mercilessly as a scapegoat for the lack of success the team was having. He was traded to Detroit for future considerations, and was an integral part of their two consecutive Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998. In the 1997–98 NHL Playoffs, he tied Paul Coffey's record for most shorthanded goals scored by a defenceman in the playoffs with 2."

Never. Said Pageau was steal of that draft and stand by that comment on 4th round pick. Love Pageau.

Sorry, but you said Prince was steal of that draft............. and your post is probably still here somewhere.

Top 10 in scoring. They believe they have improved their power play and puck possession game with the addition of Brassard. D has been improved with the addition of Phaneuf last year.

Dorion believes the team is significantly improved. His opinion matters. But we will see what the scoreboard says when it matters.

So what you're saying is the same is possible for Phaenuf despite the fact he's gone to a team without the likes of Yzerman, Shanahan, Fedorov and the grind line?

Oh and also he's Phaneuf and not Larry Murphy?

There is a large number of Senator fans (including me) that think the team needed to be shaped around the talent of Karlsson. Guy Boucher is the guy that coached Stamkos to 60 goals, he built the offence entirely around the Stamkos game.

Boucher is also regarded as something of a power play impresario. There is no doubt Ottawa struggled on the power play last year especially after Turris was hurt. Without a second puck handler, teams were able to place constant pressure on Karlsson. There was not another high end puck handler to distribute the puck. Ottawa has great shooters but need more playmakers.

The acquisition of Phaneuf was clearly intended to take some of the defensive load off Karlsson (plays over 30 minutes any time games go to overtime). The acquisition of Brassard is to add another playmaker and most importantly, to provide help on the power play. Look at Brassard's power play numbers and you will see why Ottawa wanted him.

Brassard is a left handed shooter, he sees the ice very well and makes a good pass. Phaneuf and Brassard are about building the team around Karlsson. It should have been done a lot sooner.

Tuna99 had good post that reflects the increased Dorion influence over Ottawa player decisions. Even though Murray was the GM at the time it was clear that Dorion was the pressure behind making the Phaneuf deal.

IN
Brassard
Phaneuf
Kelly
Seiliof
Bailey
Rupert
Donaghy

OUT
Zibby
Michalek
Chiasson
Weircoche
Cowen
Greening
Lindbergh
2nd round pick

From an Ottawa perspective the changes are pretty solid.

Keep it simple Sens dumped a lot of garbage on the Leafs. They wanted Phaneuf to support Karlsson.

Leafs wanted to move on from Phaneuf and start a new era and they took a lot of garbage from the Sens in order for it to happen.

Both teams seem really happy with their choices.

Leafs are going nowhere, Sens believe they will contend. The only thing that matters is when we start looking at the scoreboard for real in about 10 weeks. Getting your panties in a knot over who won a specific trade tends to be a little bit removed from the scoreboard and the standings.

you are doing what you have been accusing Leaf fans of doing for years.
I think you are really overstating what the Sens have done, there is a good chance they have taken a step back.. and what then? these moves to "win now" start failing... the sens are in real trouble .. lots of Future out the door

I think Karlsson is a phenomenal talent. Many of us believe he has the talent to take the Senators very deep into the playoffs. You want to think about Phaneuf as the #1D struggling on the Leaf blueline. Sens fans see him playing on a second pairing supporting Ceci.

People talk about what Zibanejad three years out. Sens fans talk about Brassard as a left handed shot that can help Karlsson and Ottawa shooters, especially on power play. Ottawa had 5 players score 20 goals last year. Pageau had 19 and Karlsson had 16. This team can score. The changes this summer are about winning.
