I am part of the Sens fans that loved the deal for Phaneuf. We will probably hear the name of Larry Murphy a lot over this next season.

I think the team that traded for Phaneuf to make the playoffs but missed the playoffs is clearly in the better position than the team who got 1st overall for doing the same thing. Missing the playoffs.
- systemtool

Ottawa did not trade for Phaneuf "to make the playoffs"...... they did so to rid themselves of players who were not playing for them, and did not figure into their future plans .......... players who also had "bad contracts" making them hard to trade....... unless there was a trading partner who also wanted to rid themselves of an undesirable contract.

Ottawa ends up with a player (Phaneuf) who will play regularly, leafs end up with contracts they can either try to unload or bury. They also get a prospect in Lindberg and a trade deadline asset to trade in Michalek.

Last place is last place.

Matthews did not have a particularly strong development camp.

Leafs getting ready for another year of futility.

But, nobody needs to worry about that right now.

It is summer and the Leafs are getting ready for the annual parade planning party.

If you’re talking about the parade of guys lined up to have a go with your wife; then yes, it is a great annual tradition.

Well that’s good to know. He certainly isn’t going to help the sens make the playoffs.

Amazing, Leafs are a last place team that will likely finish next year behind their most recent point total. And, Leaf fans say, but, but, but, maybe the Sens won't make the playoffs. Pathetic. Don't even have the illusion that you can finish ahead of anyone. So, you try and find fault in others in order to make yourself feel better.

i expect Sen to make playoffs. I think Phaneuf will be an important part of the story. Also expect Chabot to see good ice time. Ottawa is very high on him and they are expecting him to contribute this year (“He’s a very special player,” said Lee. Randy Lee is the Asst GM who supposedly had negative comment about Chabot. His comments were in the context of his being a special player and the Sens wanting him to dominate whenever he is on the ice.

Sens will be in tough to compete for a wildcard spot.
http://www.vegasinsider.com/nhl/odds/futures/

Doubt the Sens will rush Chabot into the NHL full-time, unless he plays himself onto the team through training camp, ahead of their 6 d-men currently on their roster, and those who've seen NHL time but will play in Bingo............ expect him to spend time in AHL at some point.

you really expect a 19yo defensman to make any sort of impact in the NHL?

Its hilarious watching you do exactly what you accuse Leafs fans of doing...its quite funny how you pump up those mid 1st round players..

We have seen this same song and dance from you with the sens ever since they were building a strong pool of Talent in 2011, they had several special players in the system all ready to make the jump ....blah blah the Sens would be contending soon ...and 5 years later ..mediocre non playoff team

Meh even the best laid plans to rebuild can go astray ,one or two top end prospects go bust .Drafting in a weakened draft ,injuries etc.Claiming one team as closer to another is nonsense ,nobody knows for certain how it will all work out

I know a few things for certain:

1)the team unwilling to spend isn't in a better position.
2)Karlsson is a very good offensive player, but not worthy of the Norris, by any stretch of the imagination... unless they officially change the qualification to "most points for a d-man"
3)It's funny to see that Phaneuf is now a very important player in the eyes of some of the more trollish fans.

Here I found a quote from this very thread that might help you

You realize when you hype the kid this way, you raise expectations and the possibility that the kid will disappoint because he is not an instant superstar.

Ottawa has so many great young guys. Puemple would make the team if it were not for Lazar who is looking more and more like a lock to start the season. And, if it were not for Lazar and Puemple we would be looking closer at Buddy Robinson who is a great physical presence on every shift. In addition Hoffman and Pageau have looked really strong since day one of camp. Mark Stone will make the team.

My guess is that Ottawa is going to move some players between now and Christmas to make space for call ups. They have the same kind of crush on the blue line. Ceci has played really well, so has Claesson. But, they already have too many guys on NHL contracts.

Not really.

What Pierre Dorion has explained is that goal scoring is the special talent that every scout searches out. The other thing they look at is the kind of goals that get scored. But, most important they monitor skill progression.

What is impressive about Puemple is not just that he scored 30 goals but it is how and where they were scored. He only scored 7 goals in the first half of the season and 23 in the 2nd half. This is the kind of progression that suggests the kid has another gear and might be able to duplicate the same result at the next level. Dorion is huge believer in Puemple.

Buemple

Kind of funny to hear TSN broadcast crew rave about the complete player that Lazar has become, far beyond what you would expect for his age. And, they talk about Nylanders lack of physical presence to play at the NHL level. Yet, the koolaid brigade proceeds to anoint William as the next coming without regard to just how hard it really is to get to the next step.

I expect Chabot to play minutes in a 3rd pairing role. I expect him to develop along the same lines as the Sens have brought Ceci along. I do think that Chabot has a higher ceiling than Ceci.

Just because we wont spend follishly doesnt mean we dont spend
Nothing wrong with Phaneuf and how little we gave to get him ,EDM could have easily used this guy .Toronto retained money up front ,as was a motivated seller

Duh, Karlsson has won the Norris 2x and runner up this year. You can spend your life trying to believe what you want to believe. But, as most Leaf fans come to understand at some point...not a lot of other people will join you in your bubble.
