Toronto... They have a good young core, AND they have Hall or Seguin to look forward to next season... OOooooooohhhh riiiiigggggghhhhttt.

Seriously though right now Ottawa is obviously in a better situation, but in 3 or 4 seasons Toronto should be in better shape.

That (being Multicultural) is not necessarily a good thing.

Let's not forget "Official Multiculturalism" that the Liberal Government implemented without a referendum, without it being a plank in an election Platform and without debate in Parliament.

Recent Statistics Canada show that up until 20 years ago, immigration was skewed to allow 4 immigrants from a first world country (Europe Australia USA etc) for every 1 immigrant from the third world.

This helped to maintain the traditional make up of Canada, its culture and heritage.

Since 1990 the immigration numbers were reversed, and for the past 20 years, for every 4 immigrants from the third world, Canada only gets 1 immigrant from the first world.

The immigrants from the third world are more lily to have larger families than those of traditional Canadian families, and also are encouraged to bring over their family members.

Statistics Canada numbers predict that by 2030, traditional Canadians whose ancestors came from Europe and the USA will only comprise about one third of the overall population.

We only have to look at some countries in Europe to see our future.

Well a lot has happened in two years (since this thread started) and it's interesting to look back at all the predictions made by all of us.

Heatley demanded a trade after he could not get his ice time with Clousten who replaced Hartsburg in 2009.

Burke traded for Kessel, and in doing so traded for key building blocks for the future.

The Senators missed the playoffs one year, and then returned to be the fifth seed in the Conference before being eliminated in the first round.

The leafs missed the playoffs both years, but have started to clean house and acquire players that Burke sees as being the answer to the team's future hopes.

Kessel IS a key building block. No one seems to understand that.

We traded at least one away for one in return.... He rolled the dice, and didn't really win that. It's fine, he's won enough others that overall I'm happy.

With the trades made by both teams, and the acquisition of top round(s) draft picks heading into the Entry draft, I'd say both teams are about on equal footing heading into the next season.

Both teams have cap space to work with this summer so a key signing or two could tip the balance in either direction. However at this point, and the current good play by both teams, it's going to be close come next years (2012) Entry draft, as to who will be selecting before the other, assuming they don't trade away their first round picks.

I like the situations of both teams. I think the Leafs have more "Ready Now" young players, but both will be fine.

I'm not saying that there isn't a "Vet" that might be worth a 1st round pick in a trade............But is there going to be a team, that thinks it's worth a 1st rounder for one of the leafs "Vets" AND ALSO has cap room that following season(s). ZERO teams are going to trade a 1st rounder for a "Vet" who's in thier last year of their contract (rental).

So either you are overrating the "Vets" on the leafs roster, or figure the planets are going to align for the leaf GM and there is a contender in need of a "Vet" who can make the space under the Cap (that may be going down?) and is also willing to shed a 1st rounder.

- Doppleganger

Can you show one instance, when a "Vet" has been traded for a 1st rounder at the trade deadline?

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Last year the leafs were in a complete tailspin, with the JFJ death watch on. They've pulled out of the spin, and Fletcher has done a lot more than most people expected he could do, given the NTCs etc.

The Senators are into the second year of their New GM's reign, and are slowly coming to grips with the reality of the Salary Cap, having to let certain players leave, sign some to new contracts and trade others.

Sure they have fallen from the heights of the Stanley Cup Finals, but not nearly (overall) as the leafs have.

To say which team is in better shape (going forward) is obviously in the eye of the beholder, and if you need a measuring stick to decide, we'll all have to wait until each team has played 82 games this season, and see who is seeded higher.

right now (before they play each other tonight) toronto has a .452 points percentage, and Ottawa sits just below with a .450 points percentage.

I don't think they'll compete with the best in the East next year (Philly, Boston, Pittsburgh and Washington). But they are definitely going to be better than this year and aren't in need of a rebuild.

They will all ignore that Gionta did something Kessel never came close of doing and it's score 48 goals in one season. Even this year, Gionta has a better goal per game ratio than Kessel.

You're missing the point.
AT THE MOMENT, Gionta is better than Kessel.
3 years from now, that's another story.
