I think people just expect a defenseman to actually be able to play solid defense. A lack of defensive ability is less of an issue when it's a winger.

I do think Karlsson is a really good player but last night was an embarrassment. He has to play better than that.

Not to mention, if Karlsson's not expected to actually play defense, then his offensive output is far less impressive.

20 goals in a good season, playing almost 30 minutes a night, without any defensive obligation... and to make matters worse, it seems Ryan's spelling troubles have rubbed off on him.

Defensive ability's not important when it comes to defensemen?

interesting

His "regular" defensive partner is still injured, and when he gets back things should improve. I would say last night's game was, if not the worst, pretty close to his worst.

Karlsson strength is no secret, he puts up points and is always in the top two or three in points on the team for the past few seasons, and leads the team in points so far this season. The other side of the coin are his defensive short comings, that are there for all to see. He sits 6th among the teams' Dmen TOI when SH for a reason, just as Kessel does not kill penalties.

leaf fans point out his defensive liabilities, and conversely Sens fans point to Kessel's lack a defensive responsibility.

Point being that both these players are going to have high TOI numbers and both handle the puck a lot and will both have high GvA numbers.

Neither player is getting paid for their defensive skill sets, but are earning their paycheques for their offensive output.

If either can bring more to the "other side of the puck", then that's a bonus.

There are a number of busloads of leaf fans that come to Sens vs leafs games in Ottawa, and I hear there is some drinking that goes on during the bus ride from the GTA before they arrive in Ottawa. Incidents like this happen more often at Sens vs leafs games in Ottawa, than against all other visiting teams and it's a big reason a lot of season ticket holders don't go to these games.

It's this minority of leaf fans that makes them all look bad.

A video making the social media rounds Monday shows the ugly side of the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs rivalry.

Apparently shot at Sunday night’s game between the teams at Canadian Tire Centre — a makeup date after the original game was cancelled because of the shooting at the National War Memorial and Parliament — the clip, uploaded to Facebook, captures a brawl in the stands between opposing fans.

In the video, which lasts 1:02, a man in a Leafs jersey appears to be arguing with a woman in a Senators sweater. The man walks up the stairs and looks to engage in more arguing with a man in a Senators jersey, with the woman continuing to be involved in the conversation.

As someone in the crowd yells “give him the Todd Bertuzzi,” the Sens fan appears to reach out towards the Leafs fan, who backs away before another man in a Leafs jersey appears, dumps a cup of beer on the Sens fan’s head and then runs in the opposite direction.

The first Leafs fan and the Sens fans then grab at each other before both men go flying down the stairs on the upper deck of the arena.

“Holy s—t”, one man yelled, while another says “oh yeah, he’s hurt.”

The video, uploaded by Sandy Cryptkeeper Chapman, had been shared on Facebook several hundred times.

In a statement Monday, Senators president Cyril Leeder said the organization will not tolerate such incidents.

“Our primary goal at each of our events is to ensure a safe environment. Fans in Ottawa should feel comfortable when bringing their family to Canadian Tire Centre,” said Leeder.

“The actions of some individuals at Sunday’s game against Toronto are of a nature that we do not condone under any circumstance and for which we have zero tolerance. Our fans have become accustomed to a secure and pleasant environment while at our venue. We will endeavour to continue fostering that type of environment.”

This isn’t the first time the Senators have had issues with Ottawa and Toronto fans getting into brawls. In February, 2012, owner Eugene Melnyk told a fan conference call something had to be done about the atmosphere.

Melnyk noted at the time the holding cells in the building were usually full during Ottawa-Toronto games.

He promised to institute a “zero tolerance” policy. The Senators have also tried to ensure they get more Ottawa fans in the building.

Ottawa Police confirmed they had no record of the brawl and had not heard of the video.

These types of incidents only happen when the leafs play in Ottawa.

It's the same thing in Montreal when Toronto is in town. Drink all day, go to the game at night, fight.

Hi lighting "leaf fan" repeatedly to try to show blame is rather lame.
