The LA Kings.

And even Dean Lombardi has said "There is a difference between data, and how you use it".

If you think he's gone out and just grabbed the best CORSI players in the league, you're dead mistaken.

Do you mean people who by traditional metrics weren't that good but by Corsi are great?

Because guys like Toews, Parise, Kopitar have good corsi numbers

- Morris

Pretty much. I guess more along the lines of good value guys, by CORSI measure. Good CORSI player for cheap, to assemble a team under the cap. Who knows, but I'm guessing they wouldn't be what the CORSI obsessed think they would be.

And?

That tells me Lombardi found a way to use those numbers and make it work... not that they're useless.

Did I say they're useless?

He's clearly using them. As are many teams now. My point has never been that they're useless. They have their use, and they tell you something about a player. I think that's what he's getting at. You can't just look at CORSI, and see that as the end result.

If it were as simple as breaking out your CORSI spreadsheet, the LA Kings would have done away with their scouts ages ago. But I'm sure they see the CORSI stats, and their scouts go and tell them WHY they have those stats. Or don't for that matter. Just like their scouts would tell them why they have a tonne of goals, assists, or other stats.

This, by the way, is another rub of mine. The CORSI crew here seem to be pretty stupid, and incapable of understanding middle ground.

"what? Dean Lombardi says he saw the spreadsheets and built a winning team from them. Anyone that disagrees is calling them useless."

How else can you interpret his statements, other than to mean they're not the be all end all, just another piece of information?

I'm not 100% sold on corsi/fenwick but I think they hold some value from a team perspective. But I'm not sold on a player evaluation based on those stats.

Which is pretty damn close to how I'd describe myself. "hold some value".

Yeah, I'd say they're definitely weaker from a player evaluation standpoint. Sort of like +/-. Scoring more goals than you give up from a team standpoint is a good thing. From a player standpoint, it can mean a lot of different things. Some of the best defensive players in the NHL have ended up with bad +/-'s some years, among the worst on their team. And obviously that is not because they forgot how to play defense for a year or two. Rod Brind'amour off the top of my head. I recall he had some very wild swings some years.

I have, and will continue to loudly object when I see people treat them as the stat of all stats. That doesn't mean I think they're useless.

Is it really that hard for you to differentiate between the two?

Well, physical players are important. But you wouldn't build a team based on their physical abilities, and nothing else. You can build a really physical team without spending much... but obviously they won't win poop without offensively and defensively skilled players.

Specifically building a team out of people that just put up good position stats but suck at everything else wouldn't prove that looking at possession is a bad thing.

Decent, not great team, in my opinion. D is a little weak past the first pairing. The depth on forward is pretty sub-par too, IMO.

I assume you mean possession, and I agree with that.

Again, this is where the issue lies. Many treat it as the number one way to evaluate a player these days. People have gotten carried away with it. WAY carried away.

I've never said looking at them is a bad thing. Looking at only them, certainly is.

I also think there is a bit of a backlash, because some (including myself) are sick of hearing it too much, and treated as the stat I describe above.

I know that. I'm saying there are some instances where a player makes what one person could construe as a shot attempt and another may not.

Example 1: What one person would consider a missed shot and another would consider dumping it into the corner.

Example 2: What one person would consider a pass that hit a defender's skate another would consider a blocked shot.

The people who count missed and blocked shots at the rink are the same people who botch hits, giveaways and takeaways and vary wildly from each other. It's not like all the advanced statisticians are counting themselves. They're collecting data from these people.

- Morris

IMO, the best way to mitigate this problem is to look at away game stats only. Rather than one set of stat keepers, you're getting stats from 29 stat keepers.... who don't have a bias towards your team.

True, but they're still skewed in that case. Just less so.

I think I even mentioned the away stats in this thread a couple of pages back.

Also, the NHL doesn't offer those at a player level, just a team level.

but where corsi is a combination of for/against, wouldn't it be worse on the road with teams biased towards your players?

besides, I guess I'm talking about standards more than biases. some statisticians just seem more likely to count everything even borderline as a hit/blocked shot

ironically, what he says would account/compensate for standards moreso than bias.

I also wonder how the hometeam being the one to have the right to put their line out last would play into that.

tell you what, when I see people treating it like it's the only thing that matters, I'll point it out.

I will say this.

This post:

Underlying stats are bad for Ottawa right now

Ottawa at 44% corsi and 103 PDO
Toronto at 47% corsi and 97% PDO

points to the wins coming from bad possession and highly unsustainable sh%/sv%

Ottawa is basically puling the leafs trick

- senstroll

certainly seems to suggest that CORSI is more important than anything else.
