5th and 6th round, you idiot. As in those are all the picks the Sens have traded away for rentals to grab that non-playoff spot.
- prock

Its going to be a long lone road for the Sens as they try to overcome the loss of a 5th and 6th round pick.

Way to ignore the high first.

Either way, one individual pick? No. But they've bled picks in these drafts.

In CHOOSING that path? Nope. These are very typically people that probably would get jobs elsewhere.

So a 1st, 5th and 6th. Averages out to a 4th.

a second and 4th averages out to a 3rd.

neither team has made the playoffs

both teams may lose their respective players.

Averages out. Hahaha. That's just stupid.

And I think both are as good as gone. But the trades were two firsts and a second, and a second and fourth.

Do you expect the Leafs to be a cup contender during Kessels tenure with the Leafs?

In the next 7 or 8 years. I'd hope so, yes.

Given the topic of the thread, do you expect the Sens to be contenders in Melnyk and his budgets tenure?

Probably not. Both teams need a drastic turn in direction and philosophy if they want to get into the conversation with the elite teams in the NHL.

The Sens roster seems stagnate to me, their drafting and developing will have to be among the best in the league if they want to become perennial playoff contenders. But that's hard to do if you trade draft picks away. I wouldn't be surprised they both Spezza and Ryan are gone by the end of next season.

The Leafs got drunk off modest success in a shortened season and decided the best way to take the next step was to fire overinflated contracts to players that cannot be able to live up to them by any means. They are a nice core of talented players up front but still lack that elusive first line center. Their defence is completely second rate and unless it is overhauled almost completely they will continue to have a difficult time making the playoffs or advancing past the first round. For my money I believe Bernier is a starter in the NHL but cannot carry this team that lacks defensive talent or structure. He will burn out year after year.

One player on the Leafs that I think can benefit the most from playing on a better defensively structured team is Cody Franson. The few times I've seen him play this season I was impressed.

The defense isn't actually bad. There is a fair amount of talent there, in fact many a hell of a lot more talented than Franson. Rielly is phenomenally talented. Its just phenomenally one dimensional, and guys like Gardiner, Franson, Rielly, just can't defend. Although Rielly did improve Leaps and bounds defensively this season. Look at the the charts in quality of competition this year. Gunnarson and phaneuf were 1-2 this year in the entire league, because Carlyle literally had no one else to turn to. Franson or gardiner getting traded would itself help, assuming they replace them with a defensive guy. Or even Granberg, who is knocking on the door. A defensive dman is desperately needed.

Reilly is easily my favourite player on the Leafs. The kid is a star in the making. I wonder what the Leafs will do with Kadri? Teams are too quick to ship guys out. I'd let him remain as the #2 center if I were Toronto. With their cap situation its going to be difficult for them to address their lack of #1 center unless they can somehow get rid of Clarkson.

I wouldn't trade Kadri at all either. He's fine for a second line centre. I also don't have an issue keeping Bozak as number 1. He may not put up 80 points, but if this season is not a fluke, his production is easily first line pace (almost 70 point pace), along with being pretty good defensively. To put that in perspectie, it's not far back of Krejci. Clearly the first line is not an issue, so why would they bother messing around with it, before looking at D?

The cap is not an issue in the least. They have a little room this summer, right now, and they don't have much to sign either. Just about every key player is locked up, so any rise in the cap is spendable room. Further, as I say, Franson or Gardiner is expendable. As of right now they have north of $21M to sign 10 players, which isn't bad at all, especially when you consider they have nothing but depth to sign in terms of forwards. And a backup goalie, maybe Reimer. These things all come cheap. McClement is a key signing, but he won't cost much either. Toss in a couple of Marlies like Granberg that make the squad next year, and there is plenty of room.

Not that you mentioned him, but I think gleason is junk and getting junkier.

I'd go after Orpik, Mitchell, Matt Greene on a short term kind of deal. Maybe you can nab a guy like Derek Morris.

Gleason is junk. We got rid of junk for junk in return. Any one of those three guys and I think you see a BIG difference next year. BIG.

yeah the Gleason deal was low risk. There was a time when Gleason looked good, but age caught up to him big time like it did Volchenkov.

He's a way better dman than either in their prime, but I'm wondering if it'll start happening to Dan Girardi.

Bozak is a fine player and has obvious chemistry with Kessel but he has a little more to prove to be considered as impactful a player as Krejci in terms of helping the team win hockey games. That's not a knock on Bozak but Krejci has proven to be extremely effective in important games as he has led the entire league in points in two of the past three playoffs.

You say most of the core is locked up? Do you want a core locked up that just missed the playoffs or are they only a few minors moves away from going from non playoff team to contender?

I was actually upset the Bruins didn't nab Gleason but he really trailed off this year. Another year on the deal too for like $4m. Yikes.

The point on the core being locked up is that almost every dollar rise in cap is spendable. Consider the impact of losing no one and having room to go out and buy another top player. Its helpful. Obviously having cap space AND a top team but how common is that?
