By the end of next season Spezza and Ryan will be on new teams but the Sens will still be somewhat comparable to the cash cow Leafs in the standings.

i don't doubt that a 22 year old, single guy, would love those cities. a 27 year old, who's getting married and starting a family.........might be a different story.

and you talk about ottawa like it were kingston or barrie or something.....it's the 4th biggest city in the country (more people then vancouver)

i'm not trying to get into a pissing match about cities..........but to claim that ottawa is a crappy place to live (and i don't even live there) is just stupid and ignorant (which is pretty much all that prock knows)

I take it you've never been to Vancouver? The city proper is rather small, and can't expand. However, it also serves as the major centre for a rather compact area that is densely populated and that population dwarfs Ottawa's.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Ottawa but it's not in the same class of city as Vancouver.

they won't both be gone........there is a cap floor to consider.

ryan will be murray's priority, and i would expect an extension would be signed on or near july 1st.

i would expect negotiations with spezza to be more touchy. team will probalby want shorter term (age and injuries), and who knows what spezza will want.

ottawa also has surrounding areas, with pretty high populations. if you added orleans, kanata, nepean, gloucester, etc, to the pop of ottawa, you're probably hovering in the 1.3-1.5 mil range.

anyways, like i said, not a city pissing match...........was just pointing out that prock is a douche

So almost half the size. Gotcha. Regardless, it has much more to do with just population. Vancouver is consistently on the top 5 most desirable cities to live in worldwide. I've lived in both cities and if I could afford it i'd still be in Vancouver.

Vancouver > Ottawa in terms of sheer beauty. Its nestled in on the ocean surrounded by the mountains for (frank) sakes. When you fly into that city it looks futuristic and perfectly pristine.

oh, i'm not disputing how nice van is, i love that city.

but if you're talking "greater vancouver"......yes, that population is huge, but that's like saying toronto has 8 million people becuase you count places liek hamilton, burlington, barrie, etc.

anyways............this is a stupid debate to have.

vancouver is nice, and is obviosly bigger than i thought.

ottawa is also very nice, and not quite as big.

Not really. Then I’d imagine it becomes as much a part of the wife’s decision as it is the player themselves, and I pretty much guarantee you the late 20s wives would pick Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver over Edmonton/Ottawa/Winnipeg.

For anyone with loads of money, yes, among all Canadian NHL cities, Ottawa would be near the bottom in terms of what the majority of young millionaires would choose. As I mentioned earlier, the reason they do well in some of these rankings is that it’s cheaper. But it’s cheaper because it’s lower demand. In fact, when you get into surveys that look at the best cities in the world, Toronto is generally up there. Ottawa is often not even included in them. As in, I don't think they even consider Ottawa.

So yes, in comparison to the rest of the NHL, as a city it’s among the least desirable. I’d say Edmonton would be lower. Winnipeg too. Those cities are terrible. Ottawa next.

Not trying to start anything, but was just wondering how many leaf players live in toronto year round?

I assume those with families would (school) be more likely to, than single player would.

Muskoka is packed with NHLers in the summer. There’s piles of them. It’s why Gary Roberts started a training facility up there specifically for NHLers.

But see, the thing is, does anybody outside Ottawa even know who Ottawa's mayor is? Probably not many, because Ottawa as a city doesn't really hold much relevance.

Again, there's nothing particularily wrong with Ottawa... but it's by no means the world class city Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal are.

It's like comparing Columbus to Boston, New York, or Chicago.

I bet you 50% of Torontonians couldn't tell you who the previous mayor was off the top of their head.

The crack-smoking mayor of Toronto isn't exactly a good thing for the city.

Now it's your turn to be ignorant

Ford's pretty much the opposite of this city's culture.

Never said it was. But I'd be willing to bet most know who David Miller is. And that probably was the case for a good portion of the country while he was mayor. Same goes for Lastman.

Can you name anyone that has ever been the mayor of Ottawa?

I like Ottawa better than Calgary as far as cities go. The thing the Alberta cities have are their proximity to the Rockies.

cuz the 20 year captain was 40, and had a year left of good hockey

ryan is 27, and has lots of years left. plus they gave up assets to get him.

if you don't understand common sense, there much point in having this conversation.

and if you think ottawa is a crappy place to live, then you obviously have never been to places like philly, pittsburgh, new jersey, or even toronto.

- sensarmy_11

And if you think Melnyk would open the purse strings for Bobby Ryan before Alfredsson, you're out to lunch. Particularly in a season where some deluded people thought Ottawa might be able to accomplish something.....
