Great blog, Sean. It scares me because, as a Ducks fan, that sounds exactly like what Pat Verbeek is doing. The Ducks have had Cam Fowler playing his strong side while rookie Jackson LaCombe was forced to play his off side. It made no sense! The kid is trying to learn the position and the team is making it harder for them!

Broberg and Holloway have not proven to be major losses at all. Broberg shooting % will collapse and he'll be an ordinary 2LD. Which means he wasn't playing ahead of Ekholm or Nurse. Holloway is playing same always which is a nothing special depth forward. Skinner is the biggest problem for Edmonton right now. He was atrocious against CBJ with not tracking pucks and being way out of position.

Holloway is hit/miss but dude Broberg is a huge loss for EDM. 8th overall pick gone now and he's got 7 points already on a very good pace for the year EDM invested 4 years in his development and let an 8OA pick walk. That one will bite them huge and we have already seen this year what losing Broberg Ceci and Desharnais has done for the EDM Defence lol. Now EDM is in basically the exact same situation before acquiring Ekholm...need to find another 3 dmen to replace what they lost. I'm sorry Dermott and Stecher the Canucks scraps ain't gonna cut it

If they can't move Nurse or Broberg to 2RD, it makes no sense with the cap structure to have such an expensive 3LD. Nurse is unmovable so no Broberg isn't a big deal. He's a 4D at best on a contender that is looking good because his current shooting% that will decrease. And when it does, he'll be the same thing he was in EDM. The problem was Holland giving Nurse that contract in the first place- not in losing Broberg.

Skinner had a poor game but so did the entire team in front. There has not been a game yet this season that Skinner has cost the team. When the Oilers start scoring 3 or 4 goals in a game and losing because of Skinner then we can discuss his play.

You couldn't be more wrong!!!
Broberg is playing like one of the best dmen in the league right now, and while Holloway isn't a star...yet...he's playing great!

Why is literally everyone in the Hockey world (except you I guess) talking about the biggest mistake the Oilers have made since Gretzky?

The Broberg loss will haunt the Oilers for decades.

You shouldn't have gone on record for this one. Because I'm going to bring it up all the time when it inevitably proves wrong. It's even more unhinged than your Bouchard opinions.

Thanks Sean.
Was wondering if any teamates came to McDavids defence after the trip? Or maybe later in the game once they knew the extent of the injury?

It sounds a tad sensational, but there really haven't been any huge blunders in terms of letting players go...
Messier at the end?
Smyth?
Larsson?
Hall?

I completely agree though...save this thread. I'll take Broberg over Bouchard every day that ends in "y".

Whoa you mean like when you defended Giordano for trying to end McDavid's career when he swept out his legs into the net? Admirable Mrs. Kadri...Admirable...

Huh?
Not sure what that has to do with my question. But then again that’s all we can expect from a guy who drives a tractor around and around in a circle, dumping water.

Firing Ralph Krueger and replacing him with that dbag Dallas Eakins
Trading the 16th and 33rd draft picks for Griffin Reinhart
Letting Smyth walk
Trading Paul Coffey
Trading Messier

Just to name a few off the top of my head

Ryan Smyth never walked. He was traded to the Islanders the first time and retired the 2nd.

There is no getting around the fact that the Nurse contract is abysmal, but they completely mishandled Broberg. While I agree that they couldn't afford to match the offer sheet, it never should have got to that point. I am willing to bet that if the team offered him 10 mil for 4 years during the summer, instead of just a crappy qualifying offer with no guarantee of ice time, then he would still be on the team. His shooting percentage doesn't mean much, he also has 6 assists to go with his 2 goals, his ice time is up over 20 minutes per game now, and he is +5 in 10 games. He obviously wont keep it up over a season, but still wicked bad asset mismanagement.

It'll be interesting to see his final numbers at the end of the season. Does suck we lost him.

That's plenty fair on the mismanagement with his contract. I still think you are all way overreacting to a tiny sample where the underlying numbers reveal he's going to regress back to being an average 2LD at best. Which is still pretty disappointing if that's his peak given his draft position.

It's a bad loss especially putting 4-5 years of development into an 8OA pick.
