It is a bit early to see either of them traded, but, here goes:
Laine has 3x$8.7M left on his contract. He would be the better option. CBJ would want a good C back and a 1st and a good prospect. Wings probably don't have the right combination. There are few teams that can absorb salary right now, so that helps the Wings.
I would try Compher (I would rather it be Copp), Berggren, and a 1st. But the price now would be higher, so maybe you have to wait and see what happens in the next couple weeks. This team may be ready to implode! Or, recoup and recover.

Maybe Y is just concentrating on Patty Kane for now.....

I really want to see Kane skate. That resurfacing surgery can be career ending (skate with contact competitively). Even if healthy, if NYR has dropped out I have to think Florida would be more attractive. Never say never, just waiting to see

It is but the coach is getting hit up for sound bites. I’ve never met Laine, I only know what he’s said in interviews (and those are often cleverly edited). He isn’t shy about saying he’s unhappy at times.

I’m not going to do a full write up, just way too hot button right now. I was asked about Adam Johnson’s passing away and some comments that were made. I had to get access to a British newscast for details as articles are being pulled off the web. The other individual involved was arrested almost a week ago. I did my best to watch the incident. It’s not good. The result was tragic, the action leading to it was avoidable. The most dangerous cuts I’ve seen are usually a result of someone tripping and falling into a skate, not a skate being lifted. We have to let this play out and make sure sound decisions are made that don’t exacerbate or excuse behavior. In the midst of this a young man born the year before I graduated high school is gone and a family in mourning. Those are the only facts I know for certain. International broadcasts and reporting are completely different than what I’m finding locally. Regardless of outcome, neck protection doesn’t seem to hinder (that I’ve heard at this point) so it and some sort of wrist protection are probably worth the league mandating.

Dem Bums are shaping up to miss year #8 out of the playoffs.
I wonder can we match another twenty-five in a row…..from the outside looking in. As the Thanksgiving Day measuring stick approaches, the stench is returning.
As it appears, our only hope since day one has been Dylan Larkin.
I have a vision of the Red Wings first playoff game in decades.
Dylan cripples out the red carpet clutching his walker to thunderous applause.
He then proudly watches his retired number 71 raised to the rafters.
At this rate, our only hope was Dylan Larkin.
If something doesn’t change, things will get a lot uglier than Stevie Y or anyone else ever imagined.

Still pissing on the Red Wings even though the future is looking incredibly bright and we are still playing meaningful games in November, these people in here act like the end is nigh.
The spoils of a generation of people being accustomed to winning consistently are shown the realities and inconsistencies of a rebuild.

We need another undersized, under weight forward Johnny Gaudreau, who will cost a lot of assets and lost his game like we need a sudden hernia to hit.
He is 5'9" / 175 cm and 165 lbs / 75 kg.

If you’re referring to me directly, just pointing out deficiencies and wondering if a trade market is shaking up isn’t peeing on the team. Letting in 3 goals on average and in most games is an issue. I only brought these names up because there was interest in Laine over the summer. For whatever reason the team struggles to start on time in most games and the D isn’t in position. That’s not a slam. It’s just an observation. I expect highs and lows, this is a fairly steady trend. I love this team and am proud to write about them. That doesn’t mean improvements shouldn’t be talked about. I brought up Johnny G because he was scratched. It is a long season. Just interesting things happening more quickly because of a flat cap and more teams wanting to hit “reset”.

It’s a fair point. I haven’t seen any appetite yet for Johnny but there is still some in Laine. I can’t gauge if he’s in a bad fit or if he’s frustrated. I haven’t heard any locker room fight stories. I like his shot and power play positioning when he’s clicking but I do T think you’re getting 200ft

Not sure if I'd kick the tires on either. Laine has a history of running his mouth. Some call it "speaking his mind", but some may see it as being a cry-baby. Knowing how tightly The Captain runs his ship, anyone who'd "speak his mind" wouldn't serve well in the Winged Wheel. Johnny Hockey is ok to watch, but I'm not sure how much abuse he and The Cat could take. Even the Wings are getting bigger, the hits are harder, etc...

There are areas of concern. I'd agree with many here who feel G & D are/should be the main focus. Husso's not working out, Reimer got lit up like a Christmas tree, and Lyon's body of work, although pretty impressive, is small. Cossa's a ways off (MUCH to my dismay...) and Augustine(o?) won't be NHL ready for quite a while. Anyone who has a decent 1A/B G situation is collecting phone calls, but that's it. Methinks we're forced to dance with the ones who brought us.

2 Days to the measuring stick. Decent performance record-wise, but we're all seeing issues starting to bubble to the surface. Trouble's a-brewin'. If Walman's ok, the bad news ain't so bad. If not, yikes. The Cat's in a slump; he's been figgered out so now he needs to adjust his game. He can be deadly, some of his SOGs have almost seem laser-guided.... The team just needs to re-set their minds and get after it...... They can do well, but if they're not able to change or they don't have a good system in place, good analytics & video analysis of their play.....could be a long year.

I'm not expecting SCPO, I'm hoping for a WC slot which I think is reasonable (not a given, mind you....takes a TON of work). But the trends right now show us that even IF we are a WC team, the 1st round could be brutal. The work needs to be put in NOW, when everything's turning to crap. This team's identity will be established on how they turn the corner from the past several weeks.

Yes, Laine may not be what Y would want in the dressing room. He may be focusing on Kane right now. Yes D is a bigger issue, but if you can land a scoring winger, outscoring the opposition works too. If only there was a way to trade Chiarot.......Maybe Chirot for Garland and bring up Eddy. If Petry keeps going the way he is, he will be bought out next summer.

Newsie indicates starting G for tomorrow is up in the air....mentioned Lyon having a solid 40min vs TRONNO as a factor in his decision.... Going to the hot hand may be a minute-by-minute decision, I reckon.....

@H2: Chiarot's dead-weight contract-wise. No one's hurting badly enough on D to accept his bloated contract. Same with Peach's kid. But at least he's had more positive showings (not saying much lately) than Big Ben. And really, if we can cut down on penalties, maybe GAA would go down? I dunno, brother. We know both G & D are hurting.......

If Laine and Gaudreau are so good, why would CBJ even consider trading them? They were supposed to be the pieces that took them to the next level, and they didn't. Why would Detroit want them? Det doesn't need inconsistent players, no matter how much potential they may have if they turn their careers around. Det doesn't need to trade assets on the hope that Laine becomes a consistent player. If they were looking for a player who misses 30 games a year to injuries and disappears for weeks at a time and then lights things up for a few games, they would have kept Mantha. They don't need to trade assets on the hope that Gaudreau gets his confidence back. Both of them have 10 points on a combined 28 games this year. How does that help Detroit?

It's fine to speculate on what players from other teams may or may not help Detroit, but it seems like a big focus. They need to develop talent and that takes time...it takes patience.

Gaudreau has been an all-star caliber player most of his career but he's also 30 years old, small, signed for the next million years, and has been underwhelming (at least by his previous standards) since moving to Columbus. I'm not sure I love that gamble.

Laine is basically what would happen if you picked a random AHL second liner and gave him a god-tier shot. About as much of a one-trick pony as you can find in the current NHL, although his one trick is extremely good. A really deep, defensively responsible contending club that needs some offensive pop could probably work with that. Detroit probably can't.

“We’re going to go with Alex Lyon,” Lalonde said of his starting goalie for Wednesday. It will be the third straight game in which No. 1 goalie Ville Husso is not between the pipes.

Walman is also a GO for tomorrow.........Going to be interesting to watch.

One switch that was evident during practice Tuesday was the decision to move Joe Veleno up to the club’s top forward unit alongside Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat.

Most of what I heard about Byfuglien in terms of clashing had to do with Evander Kane. I think big Buf even threw E.K’s clothes in the shower. What I’ve heard most about Laine is complaints about not having “the best” line mates available.

Buff was one of those guys who didn't say much, as I've read, but when he did it was usually an epic display that caught everyone off guard.... Heard the same about The Captain, was soft-spoken, but when he got fired up, was a game-changer for the guys.
