So I've been looking at moving to the country onto maybe a bit of a larger piece of land with some woods somewhere, and my brain once told me that maybe it would be sweet to set up some maple taps and try my hand at making my own small batch of maple syrup, so naturally I looked it up.

My unpopular feeling is that while I very much want it to succeed and grow and create interest and opportunities for women, honestly I'm not sure how much I'll care or follow. Right now I believe that women are nowhere near the calibre of men - in that the best women in the world are still probably not as good as the better CHL players.

But if the opportunity for growth and development has never been there, how were they to ever get there? Most of the women we see today came into it later with fewer opportunities to play, to develop and to grow.

If this grows, then women's hockey as a whole grows as do those opportunities and it will make them better by proxy.

Their challenge for the masses, and I use my personal opinion as a guide in this, is that ultimately I, and I think many sports viewing people are similar, have only so many hours available to watch sports and I'm going to put that available time into sports and teams that I know I like.

I will watch Women's Olympic hockey, like I will watch the Memorial Cup - but I don't watch the Spengler or even the World Championship because it's usually crappy hockey. Once you water down the product and it's no longer Canada vs. the US or best-on-best, I don't think the talent pool is deep enough to keep people interested.

I hope they prove me wrong.

I have a hot take on gender and sports. My wife hates it and most people I tell it to think I am nuts.

In a nutshell, I don't think there should be men's and women's leagues. Let any gender compete for a spot on any team. Men and women both have their strong areas and weak areas. Everything would sort itself out. I think it's silly to have different leagues based on genitalia.

The crazy thing is, it’s men that will make women’s hockey succeed or fail. For the life of me I can’t figure out why the stands aren’t full of women watching it and supporting it!
