HockeyBuzz Hotstove: Thoughts On The Karlsson Trade

A few points in response to this article:

Karlsson is probably RD2 so I’m hoping that he’s sheltered at even strength a bit.

Karlsson is now the CLEAR PP QB. Letang will still be on it but in a different role.

‘No long term win’ for the Penguins is such a huge long term win. I want this thing burned completely down to the ground when the time is up. Dwell in the cellar for a few years before the next up cycle.

Do I think EK, Sid, and Geno will all play 82 games again? No. But if those 3 and Letang can do 70+ for the next two years I’d call it a huge win. Pens big 3 play with high hopes till the end, maybe win a round or two, and entertain the hell out of us. I’m sure landing EK will also have a nice uptick on ticket/jersey sales, tv ratings, etc this year which is a win for the team.

I really like how the Habs fared in this trade. Petry did well in Montreal. They got a backup goalie, a prospect with some potential and a 2nd rounder in 2025. All that to take Petry's contract and help Pittsburgh clear some cap space.

If they're not planning on the playoffs any time soon, that's a homerun deal for them. If Petry gets back to some form, he's a tradeable asset again.

If Pitt can stay healthy it seems like a pretty decent trade all ways.

They still need Jagr.

Yep and we (Habs) cleared 2 roster spots for our youngsters by getting rid of players who no longer had any future with the team.

We also got Mike Matheson (and a 4th round pick) last year when we first traded Petry to the Pens, now Petry can be flipped again for some more assets down the line ... Hughes played his cards well.

The other guy involved in that original trade (Ryan Poehling) is no longer with the Pens, Hextall really messed up ... no wonder he was fired.

In the end, all teams involved got what they needed ... MTL and SJ are in rebuild mode (draft picks) while PITT are going for a last hurrah with their veterans.
