If he doesn’t make the team solely because he took $100k more than league minimum Holland is even worse than I thought.

Yeah three cups in DET and the team was pretty much in the PO's almost the whole time he was there. He sucks.

Did he bet on himself? Or just get poor advice from his agent?

My guess is the latter. He took the extra $100,000...but he won't earn any of that playing in the AHL. His annual AHL salary is just $70,000. So because of that poor advice to grab the extra $100K...he likely spends most of the year making $70,000. Stupid move. Should have signed for the league minimum of $775,000 to give him the best possible chance to make the roster. Even if he hangs around the roster for a few weeks, he would earn more than his entire year in the AHL.
