Penguins, Canes and Red Wings in on Karlsson I am told a third team (likely Chicago) has been figured out to make the money work, but the hold up s San Jose’s asking price…Pesce would be in the Canes deal…But really no other names are leaking out..I believe this could get done today/earl tomorrow

My sources tell me the 3rd team is the hold up. They're looking for a first to eat a good portion of Karlssons contract.

Let's say Chicago eats some contract for a 1st, wonder that that means for the Wings? If you look at those 3 teams, the Wings are more likely to give up a higher pick (not guaranteed) so I wonder if Chicago also has some say in where the pick comes from. like we'll eat $2 million if it's Detroit's pick but $1.75 if it's Pittsburgh's, $1.5 if it's the Canes? Interesting stuff.

From a Pens standpoint, I'm not worried about the picks but I am concerned how to unload Petry who has a no trade. Petry? He controls his destiny with his no-trade clause. Gets to choose 15 teams but that's easy to make impossible for the Penguins to work with.

Wings are not trading their own pick and they are not trading for Karlsson.

Agreed. Doesn't make much sense in that Detroit probably knows they won't contend any time soon. Of course Pittsburgh is probably in the same boat with the exception that they have fooled themselves into believing they can still contend with all those gray hairs on the roster. The Canes make the most sense.

chicago is currently at $64M in cap spend. they also only have 4 defensemen under contract so sending petry to chicago for cap relief would make sense.

Random thought...Gibson ($3.5M retained) + 2nd in 2024 to PIT for Jarry + DeSmith?

I know Jarry just signed, etc etc...aside from that, was just curious on thoughts...

Would love to Pens get Karlsson and Hanafin - most likely not possible. But maybe if we give up a 1st or two and part ways with Petry and Petterson. I also wouldn't mind taking Jonathan Toews as an experiment at 3C - seems like the going rate is $1M for some of the older star centers. That would move Eller to 4C where I think he would be very effective.

I'm just worried that we're done this off-season and this is what we roll with...

I think it is possible - would cost most of our draft over 2024 and 2025, along with Poulin and Pickering..

Anyway, just spit-balling but something like below may be possible:

Petterson + 1st in 2024 + Poulin + Ty Smith for Karlsson ($5M retained)

Hannafin for 1st in 2025 + Pickering (assuming contract in place with Hannafin $6M/6yrs?)

Petry + DeSmith + 3rd in 25 to CHI (?) for 5th in 24

Salary out is about $12.5M, Salary in is about $11.5, although Hannafin would likely want extension to $6M after this season). Next season Carter is off the books, and his $3+M slides over to Guentzel.

We have Granlund still who we could move out to make space (at some mid-round pick cost), and I'm assuming Cater is immovable.

Toews at $1M is an interesting idea - assuming he would be healthy...we'd need to hope Granlund finds some scoring ability, or we move him out for cap space and figure a way to get some decent player to play on Toews wing, maybe move Rust there and get lucky to land Tarasenko on a 1 year $2-3M deal to play with Malkin?

Anything is possible!! We may be able to snag someone like Frank Vatrano from Anahiem for Grandlund plus (pick, prospect).

What does the basis of a deal look like? Pens send out POJ, Petry, First, Prospect for Karlsson and 3 mil retained? Obviously more complex and moving pieces, third team, etc. but what does it cost Pittsburgh to get him at a price that keeps them cap compliant?

I guess today and tomorrow fell apart. Maybe the next day then. What happened to Toronto and Edmonton and Ottawa - are they out now?

Here's the offer in question which was revealed by a Pittsburgh insider:

To Pittsburgh:

Erik Karlsson (at $9M per season)

To San Jose:

2x 1st round picks (lottery protected)
Pierre-Olivier Joseph
Mikael Granlund (likely traded to a third team)
