I'd say it has less to do with being the home town, than being the town with the most rabid media, that leads to the greatest exposure for their next contracts.

I don't think it has anything to do with hometown advantage. That clearly didn't work with Stamkos! Or O'Reilly.

Their advantage is they have an offensive team with high-end fire power and room in the top 6 for these guys to come in and pad their stats, setting them up for future contracts.

Also helps the cap was flat and is expected to go up next year, so these guys have even more motivation to only take 1-yr deals and cash in next year.

Bertuzzi directly said that signing for 1-year was simply a chance to win. The liklihood of playing with Matthews/Marner/Tavares to put up big numbers and cash in as a UFA next year is obviously a huge factor, but not something you would publicly say. Has very little to do with where he was born. If Toronto was a bottom-feeder devoid of talent he wouldn't even consider them. This is about putting up huge numbers and cashing in next year.

But sure, as the musical chairs goes on everyone wants to sign with their hometown. Didn't work with O'Reilly...or Marc Staal...or Cogliano...or dozens of others.
