Loved this write up man. I will agree with ya, hate how everything has an attachment, or a hidden meaning or needs to be labelled into a category for unfiltered criticism. Things cant just 'be' anymore, and it sucks.

Favorite memory of the wings is a hard one. I think instead of a specific one, I miss the '96-'02 Wings-Avs rivalry. High octane, physical and chippy and always entertaining hockey. Was always the best kind of hockey to watch and capped with my favorite player Ray Bourque winning his first cup after 22 years of playing. (coincidentally still my favorite Playoffs moment as well).

Apologies, I know that was supposed to be tomorrow's headline)

Bourque was a class act. Also very good treatment of Esposito in Boston for jersey retirement. Those years were “wow”. They show clips to young players who can’t believe it was real.

Compared to how the game is played today, I can totally understand why. I got a favorite wings moment too for your next one, ill save it for the appropriate blog. Grew up watching the avs and wings with my bruins. Always have a healthy respect for both.

Oh for sure. I watched one of the “bonus” games in the Wings championship box set and mentally i kept waiting for a whistle. Elbows flying, slashes, groin shots, just nuts. Then I’d hear old interviews of slashes that would break someone’s wrists (Gordie Howe, Redmond, etc) even a stick broken over someone’s head that basically just shut down their life and career. The “dump, chase and pretend to be tripped” model drives me nuts. Grab your face fall to your knees. At least they sometimes call embellishment and punish it now. But yeah, I think older players had to take a lot of abuse. Now it’s just so fast that the dangers of injury by 95mph puck or 2 players going almost 30 mph crashing into each other seem to have picked up some steam.

Concussions and CTE are no joke. I never played competitive at higher levels but I got my bell rung a few times by players much larger than myself. Those symptoms linger for a long time. Vision still goes hazy if I stand up after sitting for an hour or more.

Pretending to be tripped and the grabbing of the face. yeah, im with you there. Becoming more like Soccer style embellishments. I have never thought to myself "Jesus, the guy barely (or didnt) even touch him!" Too used to the old days still I guess.

Oh, concussions are a nightmare. I’ve been on disability since 2016 because of a closed head injury. Part of the issue is that if you actually bruise your brain, the bruise doesn’t really ever heal (oxygen are a big part of healing and not a ton in that space). There’s a new therapy but it’s really scary. What I really don’t get is Rugby. Almost no one wears head protection and those that do wear a weird “mesh”. The soccer “falls” did turn me completely off. My dad was from England (step dad) and coached. He was way better at cricket. Was a legit bowler. That was fun

Have you done any research on psychedelic therapies? Veterans with PTS and CTEs are seeing amazing results in Mexico, Columbia and a few countries in Africa. I know a few veteran organizations that are helping get vets get the treatments. They are working so well, the VA has finally started clinical trials. If you’d like more info, I could put you in touch with a few orgs.

Idk, when I was a kid the prevailing sentiment among most friends others kids seemed to be “don’t try to label me”.
Nowadays everyone proudly labels themselves and everyone around them. The “sorting hat” run amok. Everyone stay in the House chosen for you....
The more technology and info at people’s fingertips, the more stupid we seem to become.

I have looked at a lot of that information. I do have a brother who manages a dispensary and one who is licensed to grow for personal therapeutic usage. I looked at some of the non THC options and for some reason, I react poorly. I get very sick even with just some of the lotions.

The newest therapy I’ve seen used for CTE (former athletes, veterans and others) is a type of oxygen therapy. It simulated what you go through when deep scuba diving by making your lungs and body work harder until you get to the top point, then you slowly return (similar to how a diver has to slowly rise back up or they get a certain hype of sickness). Some incredible results but as you can imagine, some not so great. I’m going to look at the more “traditional” oxygen saturation but it’s very expensive not covered by insurance and you pay for everything up front

Good Friday, Jeremy. GREAT write-up and perfectly timed....as usual.

Sports is supposed to be an out-let, a chance for someone to flip their lids over a game, argue with opposing fans, then snag a Ginger Ale with them. The way you avoid the hot potatoes is impressive, despite how they're intricately tied to every aspect of our daily lives. I stopped watching the news to the best of my ability, got my blood pressure WAY too high, too routinely. I say (for what it's worth); KEEP DOING WHAT YOU"RE DOING! you help us stay sane. Read some of the other blogs on here; fans are really jerks to each other. Here, there's peaceful discourse and discussion. No one's truly mean for the sake of being mean. That's SOLELY because of YOU! The example you've set for us is awesome. I find myself asking how to handle hot-button issues regularly, I just come here to get that Zen feeling, then press on. You, good Sir, are a gem!!

I played rugby for 19 years, All-Army for 2, started wearing a scrum-cap (head gear you see some guys wearing now) about 3 years before I was forced to retire. I played in excess of 250 matches.......1/2 of them are a blur. I got knocked out several times, came to with a beer and played on. I was so dumb. No one cared about concussions/TBI/CTE. I was rear-ended on the expressway just over a year ago, I was stopped, she was doing in excess of 65mph and parked her car in my trunk. I dialed 9, couldn't remember 11 I guess. Yeah, I was knocked out cold, taken to the ER and am STILL in therapy. thankfully, guys like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Junior Seau (VERY sad to have lost him, but the medical advancements because of his suicide are far-reaching), and Kurt Busch have brought brain injuries to the fore-front of the public. When I saw the hit on Stone the other night, I was livid, brought me back to the hit on Larkin. The dude gets a few games....REALLY??? He should've been kicked out for the remainder of the SCPO, in my opinion. He targeted Stone, you could see it. Now, some will say I'm biased because of my concussion history, and I'll accept that. Sports leaders HAVE to do better policing of head injuries.....Jeremy, YOU know how a life changes because of them. They suck, and life is NEVER the same. I think head-shots need to carry a much more severe penalty, people's lives are devastated by concussions & head injuries.

THIS

Not claiming to be the best parent, but my kids read books as voraciously as most kids game or tweep (or whatever the heck it's called...).

EXCELLENT post, Rat.

I've been accepted into the Army's TBI clinic in Augusta, GA. Intake is July.....

They're exploring many non-traditional therapies, oxygen saturation is among them. They put you in a hyperbaric chamber and take you down/up to cause oxygen saturation of the body which is supposed to help the brain heal faster and more completely. Thankfully, the military insurance pays for it, it is VERY cost-prohibitive. Some normal insurance policies will pay, but the cheetah flips you have to go through are set to make you quit the 1st time you ask. Absolutely insane that someone who's diagnosed w/TBI cannot obtain access to the full gamut of options.....but that's how insurance works, I guess.

I had to threaten a Presidential Inquiry once so I could be seen at the Mayo Clinic in JAX, FL. The military healthcare system (TriCare....or as I call them: Try Not To Care) denied my being seen because I'd not exhausted all options.....after 5 surgeries, IV feeding for 2 years, and other not-so-pleasant stuff. Needless to say, I went to my Rage Place, but I knew how to work within the system....and how to handle the final options for appeals.

TRULY hope you can find treatment, believe me when I say I can relate to SOME of what you're dealing with.
