JVR as a UFA to Chicago. Assume other contending teams don't bite on him, so instead he signs a slight overpay in term and/or money to be the powerplay and net presence on a line with Bedard. Might not be the job JVR wants, but it could be the job he gets.

JVR gets to shotgun a young potential phenom and have some fun on slightly inflated contract for his value for a couple years, and gets to play with a very talented player. Also a widely acknowledged, "good pro", JVR will be a consistent good example with lots of experience. JVR to the net front, Bedard, and a puckhound forward to make a competitive line that can create even if as a group they're not the most talented.

Chicago could overpay a bit and not have to commit to an old player that won't be around when things actually turn around.

Didn't realize Jamie Kompon was an assistant in FL, just noticed him on the bench.

Think you should sign Hornqvist, he has done wonders for the Cats this season just by hanging out with them while collecting his LTIR pay checks! He could do the same for your team!

Like to see the hawks bring back domi and put him on the wing with Bedard. Ryan reeves just as a deterent if any player wants to take a run at Bedard.
Miles wood conner Clifton just some options but the Ufa market is not very deep this upcoming off-season. Would also like to see Davidson and company try and find a solid prospect that is blocked on a team , much like the Patrick sharp situation. Who and what team anybodies guess.

I would like Damon Severson and Brayden Mcnabb so along with Nolan Allen and Kevin Korchinski the Hawks would have a All Saskatchewan Top 4 D!

You could sign the "what could have been if signed 10 years ago" line:

Corey Perry, JVR, and Wayne Simmonds.

In a slight twist on the game, they could also trade for "Ek rumors that were oh so close..."

Malkin (who still wouldn't be "the man"), Doughty, and Kopitar!!

No player can deter an opponent from taking a run at a star player. He can only try to go after him after the fact.

The excitement, the wonderment, the dare to pretend: the edge of it all is sorely lacking

AS PERTAINS TO THE QUITE LIKELY SORT OF HORSECRAP SHORT TERM ADDITIONS

JVR is a reasonable helper for reasons stated in the earlier comments yet of course he has an injury history.

I refuse to think too hard about KD additions other than the prospects. It hurts to think about the other changes.

Quick take without deep contemplation: I wouldn’t mind some of the veteran dmen sticking around for a partial or full season as some kids put in some time in Rockford. Tinordi, Engeland, but Zaitsev we might be stuck with his contract. Rather one or more of them than C Jones!

I just don’t know how likely Domi returns but I want him back. But why not allow some of these younger lesser lights among the forwards play and maybe if they show well they can be flipped later on; I mean guys like Bjork, A Wagner, even B Robinson could emerge. Blackwell ….However it is a numbers game therefore any of them goes if we can get even a 5th or later draft choice

In reality I suppose two of them are not back if two spots are saved for a veteran like JVR and a tough winger riding shotgun with Bedard

And AA is cheap but he can be let go if it means one of those lesser lights is getting an opportunity. BTW I like Richardinson so he stays. This darn screen replaced D I c k e r s o n with Richardson when I submit Must be a problem I cannot correct even when I spell check

Monahan?
Seems like he's fallen off a bit the last few years,it could be a rejuvenation project for himself. Where he plays alongside Bedard or mentors him a bit and then they send him to a playoff contender for some prospects etc ..

I know it is still waaay too early, but I'm also wondering if they'll be able to find a Raddysh or a Lafferty at the trade deadline next season as well

His health? His ability now less due to health/past injuries and it adds up to how it affects his capacity to still play at NHL pace?

Monahan has fallen off the past few years because he has had a litany of injuries most notably his hip(s). I would put Toews and Monahan at even odds to play next year, and if they do, the games played would likely be about the same as well.

In terms of guys that could be surprisingly good next year, I wouldn't sleep on Guttman, provided he fully recovers in time to be fully ready for camp. Fast, smart, good hands and willing to go to the net. All good traits.

Playoff recency yes, but the Hawks know you win with guys who show up in the playoffs, not regular season wonder boys.

These are also guys young enough to still be relevant when the Hawks are hopefully Cup contenders again in 3-5 years.

I prefer cap dumps for assets over Signing UFA. the better and younger ones will want 3-4 years min. my guess is we take a little less then we would typically want on Cap dumps let the first 2-3 days of UFA happen and stay quiet and then find guys who who over valued themselves and sign them to 1 or maybe 2 years deals. probably mostly guys in 30's. those guys are going to try and get the 3-4 year deals but wont get them at the AAV they want the league is pretty agressively shifting to givng the guys coming off the ELC the big contracts. The bridge deals seem to really only work with bottom 6 and 3rd pair D. it makes sense givning a guy 22 year old 60 point player 8mil compared to Bo horvat at 31 70 pt he odds of it being a break even deal is way toward the 22 plus it feels like ARB rights are a bit toxix for GM's.

Whoever the Hawks pursue, a lot depends if they want to get paid well playing here or paid less playing for a contender.

I wouldn't mind Domi or AA back, but at 28 years old, will both of them, especially Domi, want to leverage their performance last season into a multiple year contract? Hawks have the advantage of offering them more than the market price based on their cap situation, but term may be a problem. Would Domi settle for 3 x 4.5M and AA for 2 x 3.25M ?

I would also like to see a vet or two on 1 year contracts who could be flipped for a pick at the TDL. Maybe JVR for 1 year at 3M? Ryan Reaves, Phill Kessell, and Mattias Janmark are a few other names.

I keep thinking about Drouin. Seems as if he's been injured a lot the past few years. I don't know if he's been dealing with personal issues too, but at 28 he should be thinking about resurrecting his career. Maybe he had a good relationship with LR at Montreal and would feel comfortable here playing under him and with Bedard. If he has a decent year he could be flipped too.

True but knowing Reeves is coming after you might be the one guy who could deter.

Hmmmm....

1. Domi- Like his skillset and willingness to stick up for teammates but think he's priced out for term
2. Gamble on one of Monahan or Drouin, high risk/ high reward at TDL
3. Looch- I'm from an era of Manson/McGill/Russell/Grimson/Peluso/Probert, always want an enforcer
4. T. Hall- see if we can get him as a favor to Bruins to help them sign Bertuzzi/Orlov
